Beginning June 6th 2019, this 4-week, How to Capture Magical Light, Online Photography Workshop, is going to unpack diverse lighting scenarios so you can not only learn to find that magical looking light but capture it like the PROs!
Disney Jr. Host, Me Ra Koh – The Photo Mom, only offers this course once a year. You not only receive video lessons, but Me Ra and Brian, her husband who is also an award winning photographer and cinematographer, will be critiquing your photo assignments throughout the course. Upon registering, Full Registration participants will also receive their award winning DVD downloadable series Beyond the Green Box and Refuse to Say Cheese to help get you prepped in Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO. Magical Light…the kind of light that takes your breath away. How do pro photographers capture this light over and over again?
Hold on as we say goodbye to Auto mode and Aperture Priority mode!
“Even Aperture Priority mode?” some of you ask. YEP! We are going all Manual to capture magical light. And I PROMISE, shooting in manual is WAY easier than you would ever guess. Brian and I are going to teach you step-by-step how we shoot in manual to get consist, magical lighting.
Every time I say this to a CONFIDENCE Workshop, they look back at me with doubt in their eyes. But by 1pm on Day 2 of the workshop, they are shooting in manual like pros (and giving me big hugs!)! How we learn makes a difference in how well we understand something.
For those of you who don’t know, before I was a photographer I got a Masters Degree in teaching. I take teaching, or better yet–empowering and equipping YOU, very seriously. I’m confident that you will walk away with a deeper understanding of capturing magical light that you never expected! I’ve been testing that confidence for almost a decade with a thousand women who have come through our workshops. And I haven’t lost one yet!

This 4 week, intensive, online course is going to unpack diverse lighting scenarios so you can not only find the magical light but capture it consistently! Be prepared to dive into Metering Modes and get really cozy with your Exposure Compensation Scale! (What an insanely big term for a small thing! We will demystify a lot of those terms!)
Walk through the step-by-step process I make every time I start a photo shoot, whether it’s of my kids reading under a blanket or for a portrait shoot in NYC. I also want to say, be prepared to make mistakes (because you have to give yourself freedom to get worse before you can get better). But when you’re shooting gets better, and your “happy accidents” turn into consist shots, you may just come to Dallas, TX and give me a hug! YEAH!! Can’t WAIT to do this with YOU!

If you’re saying that to yourself, I get it. Critiques can either tear you apart or empower you to fly. I’m so passionate about the empowering type of critiques that I’ve been studying the art of critiques AND doing it for over twenty years with both writers and photographers. I promise that we will push you, challenge you, but you will leave feeling stronger and more confident. We will never put you down, criticize or discourage you. And we want give empty praise either.
We will look for consistencies in your shooting, traits you unknowingly do that you can build on while also challenging you to stretch a little farther, try the exercise one more time. This is all about giving you the tools to create magical light in your photos, and we’ve done this for over a thousand women! Get ready ladies! We’re going to have a BLAST!

- CONFIDENCE GRAD/ALUMNI: This is the same course as the Full Enrollment, but because you’ve taken our CONFIDENCE Workshop and loved so much, we’re making the course available at a discount.
- Shadow Course Enrollment: This is a way to take the course at half price. We want this course available to as many people as possible to empower you with your camera! Since we can only critique so many photos per week, these spots are available to ladies that are okay with not getting images critiqued or feedback on the photo assignments, as well as not asking questions during our group sessions, or your budget is a little tight, but you still want to capture that magical light like a pro. If you connect with any of those traits, your a Shadow Girl!
Cancellation Policy
If for some reason you should need to cancel, we will apply your payment(s) as credit to a future CONFIDENCE or online workshop within 24 months of your original workshop up to 45 days before the workshop weekend.
Canceling within the 45 days leading up to the workshop. We will do our best to fill your spot and apply your payment(s) to a future workshop within the next 24 months. But we can’t guarantee this. PREREQUISITES
You will need a camera that allows you to manually change the Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO, whether this is a hybrid camera, mirrorless or DSLR. I strongly urge you to take this course after you have a basic foundation of knowledge for Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO. Here’s how we want to help! When you register for this course, we will send you our award winning DVD download series to help you start building that strong foundation! You can learn more about Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO and storytelling in Beyond the Green Box and Refuse to Say Cheese. Without this foundation, you may feel a bit lost in the assignments. We want to set you up for success!

Welcome to the summer annual, online course “How to Capture Magical Light”! This course is inspired by over eight years of selling out our 2-Day CONFIDENCE Workshop! We know that not everyone can fly to us in Dallas, TX. This is our way of coming to YOU this summer and infuse your shooting with new skills, tips, tricks, empowering knowledge, inspiring critiques and MORE! And, did I say how excited I am?! CRAZY EXCITED! Many of you live abroad (Australia, Africa, Europe, India, Indonesia and more) and have emailed me for years, asking for an opportunity to learn while not being able to fly across continents to our CONFIDENCE Workshop. Others have extremely busy schedules and budgets that won’t allow for a weekend at the hotel, the airfare, childcare and workshop cost. And many of you have taken our Confidence Workshop and said this was the BEST refresher ever! Well ladies, I want you to know this summer online course is designed with you in mind! This summer is all about enriching you and your joy of photography. We are going to have a BLAST!

Full Course Attendee. $600
When you sign up as a Full Course Attendee, you will receive all that is stated above; detailed, personal critiques each week from Me Ra, a second pro photographer’s critique each week, 4 weekly assignments/photo challenges and opportunity to discuss the assignments online within the private thread. Limited to 24 people.
Shadow Course Attendee. $250 (more than half price to shadow along)
When you shadow the course, you will receive the weekly assignments, but you will not receive any critiques or be allowed to participate in the online conversation. It’s just like auditing a class in college. You get to sit in the back, soak it all in, but you can’t participate with the students or speak with the teacher.

We love our CONFIDENCE GRADS and want to continue to empower their growing confidence. There are two payment options. As our CONFIDENCE Workshops provide payment plans, we want to do all that we can with our online courses too.
- You can break your payment into two payments. The first half will hold your spot when you sign up, the second half will automatically be paid in 30 days or by the first class (which ever is sooner). I have taken the Confidence workshop and the Magical Light Course. I loved both and learned so so much. I feel really lucky to have been able to take both classes. I am 57, do not do this as a business, and I am a grandma. What I loved about the Confidence workshop was finally learning the technical side of photography from a women and not being made to feel like idiot for not knowing everything about the camera. What I loved about the Magical Light Course was learning how to use light to make my pictures look so much better. The Magical Light Course touches on the technical side also and if I remember correctly a person could learn how to shot in Manual mode just from taking that course. I have actually taken the Magical Light course twice, Mainly because I thought the first time I took it I did not devote as much time as I should have. So I took it again a couple of years later thinking I had more time to devote to the 4 weeks. Again, I felt like I did not devote the time that was needed. My issue was getting my kids (who are older) to model for me to complete the assignment and send in the pictures for the weekly critique (which is by far the best part of the class). I actually thought about taking the course again, but my youngest is graduating from high school and the month of June is so busy.( I have a new grandson who could be my model and he is a baby who can not run or talk back to me). If I could have only taken one or the other of the two, I would take the Magical Light Course. Since I am 57, I would have a hard time taking the class with a cross country move going on. But, you young kids now a days seem to be able to do it all! You will need internet access to get your weekly assignment and to up load your pictures. The class would probably be a nice distraction to the hassles of moving! And the critiques are awesome to receive. So sorry for the long post. Everything Mera and Brian do is top notch.

I have always wanted to go to a Confidence Workshop but it is difficult to get away for the weekend so this online Magical Light class was the perfect format for me to have an opportunity to work with Me Ra, whose work I love! I am a photo hobbyist definitely not a professional or have aspirations to become one. I had 2 strikes going into this class. I can tell you my photos are out of the ballpark compared to where they were before. I look at light so differently and my photos are pretty incredible!

I highly recommend this course! I’ve already taken 2 Confidence Workshops and wondered if I would learn anything new because my brain is so full. I decided to take it to keep me accountable to practice practice practice, and it worked! I was really surprised at the time Brian and Me Ra took to provide such thoughtful, personal, encouraging and comprehensive critiques, wow. Each week I was excited to get the next homework assignment, they were so fun! And a shift happened for me in understanding (and searching!) for light to tell a story. For sure a lot of unexpected “aha ” moments happened.

This course is so wonderful to learn and capture the ‘Magical Light’. Brian and Me Ra are very kind and helpful people.
Even though I was a shadow student, the lessons were easy enough to understand and learn. I will be re-reading the lessons and re-watching Me Ra’s videos and will be practicing all the techniques and tips of the trade to improve my photography skills.

I shadowed this course, as I thought I wouldn’t have the time to keep up as a full attendee. I was skeptical that I’d learn much as a shadow attendee in an online course, but I really do understand how to use my camera better now. I have been following Me Ra since 2011 when my daughter was born and came across her book Your Baby in Pictures. I have learned so much from her and Brian about taking photo’s of my kids. Not only the technical side of it all, but also just capturing those magical moments of my babies! I took this course as a shadow student and could not have been more pleased. The weekly assignments were so detailed and had a wealth of information! It made learning fun and easy and Me Ra takes you through it all step by step. With a busy life I knew I could not commit myself to the full course at this time. BUT what was so great about it was that I could still follow along with all the other students on our private Facebook page and felt like such a big part of it all and was learning from them too. Take this course, it will teach you everything you need to know about capturing those magical light photo’s! Me Ra and Brian are awesome, you will love them!

This class is amazing! It has helped me improve my photography more than anything else I have come across. I first took this class as a shadow participant, and then I referred back on the knowledge gained and the resources provided in the course all year long. The following year I took the class as a full participant. I was blown away with how much I learned. I loved how the lessons were set up. The “homework” me analyze so many things that I had never thought of before. As I learned more I would develop so many questions that were answered in the next lesson. Each lesson and homework assignment was set up so I was ready to absorb the information in the next lesson.
Through the weekly personal critique I learned so much direct at exactly what I needed for my photography journey, but we also all benefited from the questions other students posed through the Facebook group. I can try imagine learning more from an online course than I did from this one. I may take it again one day!

So many good things have already been written up about this course, but wanted to take the opportunity to confirm all of the goodness it has to offer.
The class has been set up to be very supportive and a place of personal growth. No judgements, just opportunities to learn and stretch oneself’s photographic skills.
In the past, previous photo critiques have been stressful and nerve wrecking. After overcoming my initial fears, I found myself to be the biggest critic. Brain and Me Ra’s critique were like sitting down in a coffee shop, hanging out with a good friend and talking about photos. No big judgements with lots of kindness and support. They truly want to see their students succeed and are willing to go the extra mile to make sure you get your money’s worth!

Highly recommend this course!! I have been nervous about photographing people up until now and preferred to stick to landscape and travel photography! This course has improved my skills vastly. Finding the magical light takes your photos from ordinary to extraordinary and who doesn’t want that?!? It’s not a huge time commitment however the more time you put into it each week, the more you’ll get out of the course through the group feedback, interaction and the photo critiques.

Magical Light is a class for EVERY PHOTOGRAPHER. It is totally worth every penny. This class challenged me beyond my limits and at times annoyed me because it forced me to push myself, but the positive results were definitely SO, SO WORTH IT!
