Sony and Me Ra

Meet My New Love, the SONY a77 DSLR!

Me Ra Koh

Holy smokes!  I’m in love!

Brian says I haven’t stopped talking about a new camera since I held the copper brown A330 DSLR.  Well, SONY’s new Sony A77 24.3 MP Digital SLR showed up at our house and from the first moment I pulled it out of the box I was in love.  This is a 24.3 megapixel camera WITH the award winning Translucent Mirror Technology for under $2K!  I LOVE the way it fits in my hands.  I love how heavy and light it feels at the same time.  It’s got spunk but not overwhelming–know what I mean?  Popular Science magazine awarded this beauty as one of the Top 100 Best Innovations!

Most of all, I’m LOVING THE RESULTS!

I took it for a test spin at the Florida workshop.  When the babies showed up for our model shoot, I was so excited to see what this beauty could do.  I also used the new Sony 16-50mm f/2.8 Lens.  Since the a77 DSLR is a partial frame sensor, the 16-50mm lens gives me similar results that a Sony 24 -70mm f/2.8 Carl Zeiss Lens would on a full frame sensor.  Say hello to more versatility!  Being able to go down to f/2.8 (for that buttery blurry background) while getting wide or framing a portrait is what I love most!

Having never shot with the a77 DSLR, I’m pretty excited about the results!

Wardrobe change!  🙂  Isn’t she DARLING!

All of these photos were shot with using natural light in hotel rooms.  No studio lighting or fancy accessories.

Love that expression on his face!

Check out the six month old twins!  Steal my heart!

I processed these photos when I was showing our workshop ladies how I edit images.  This last one of the twins is pretty much straight out of the camera.  The color in SONY cameras is breath taking, just ask the ladies at the workshop.  They were witnesses to how great the color was before I even touched the images for edits.

Anyone else own the Sony A77 24.3 MP Digital SLR?  If so, how are you liking it!  Post up some of your images on my FB page!  I want to see YOUR results too!

xo,

m

  1. Can’t wait to read this!! I was dubious when the A77 was announced and had decided to jump ship. I ended up buying it after reading reviews and I love, love, love it!

  2. Nicole says:

I do!!! When I read about the EVF I almost jumped ship but now that I have it the EVF is my favorite part!! I so rarely miss an exposure any more because I can see exactly what my picture looks like. I agree, I also do very little PP anymore. The WB on that camera is truly flooring!

  3. Sara Arrigoni says:

Thanks for the review! The A77 has intrigued me for awhile. 🙂

  4. Wow…I know what I’m saving up for now! I miss my old one 🙂

  5. Thank you for posting this! I’ve been eyeing the 77 for a while. I still shoot with a 100 that I still love, but I know I need to upgrade!

  6. I’m a Sony girl through and through – started with a F717, then an a350, and now the a580… You HAVE my attention! LOL

  7. Lisa says:

I SO wish I had $2,000 to be the A77 and 16-50mm f/2.8. *Sigh.* Maybe I’ll book a few jobs REALLY, REALLY SOON and I can order them.

  8. MeRa! I just “ordered” this camera from borrowlenses.com to try out for the weekend. Can’t wait to get my hands on it!!

  9. Misty Dawn says:

I started with an F717, then upgraded to an a350, and now I’m using the a580. I love my Sony cameras and am a Sony girl through and though.
My concern is that I wouldn’t be able to use my favorite lens (Sony 18-250) on the a77. I’m a nature photographer, and I LOVE that lens.

  10. ali anderson says:

that is definitely one thing that can’t be beat with ANY of the sony cameras – AMAZING color straight out of camera. *swoon* ever since shooting with the a33 for SOAR, i’ve been eyeballing the a77 myself!

  11. Me Ra says:

Holy smokes! It’s so fun to read all your comments ALREADY! And it’s only 9:30am PST! Your enthusiasm is one of the things I LOVE about working with SONY! They are just kicking it with their cameras and technology, I mean the COLOR is gorgeous, seeing your exposure change right in front of you, I could go on and on. But I find that a lot of SONY users feel shy to speak up b/c they are surrounded by other camera brands. Love that you are speaking up here because it’s a blast to feel a part of a community that is going for it!

Woo hoo!! Now post up your a77 photos on my FB page! I wanna see!

  12. Those twins are precious and of course, your photos rock!

  13. Oh, how this inpsired me! I’ve got an a700 and often feel like I’m a loner because I shoot Sony.

  15. Shannon says:

Hi MeRa 🙂 I’m curious if you also use the a900? If so, how does the a77 compare to that one? Also, I’ve heard the a900 is discontinued, are they in the process of upgrading that one as well? I am really considering selling all my Canon equipment & switching to Sony, but I want to make sure I switch to something that is comparable with the 5d Mark II…I would love to hear your comments & opinions on this, since if I remember correctly, you used to be a Canon user yourself….

  16. Monica says:

    Hi, MeRa,
I am getting seriously ready to purchase the Sony a77 and I stumbled upon your blog and comments re: this camera. Did FB folks post their photos to your FB page like you asked? Just wondering if you have the link to forward to me so that I can see samples. I know there are Flickr samples but I would be curious for more. Thanks so much 🙂
