Step by Step Tutorial: How to Capture a Family Portrait with Baby

Me Ra Koh

With the camera still at our side, we try different set ups to see what position will flatter everyone the most.  I’ll try three or four different set up ideas for my family portrait with baby until I feel this confirmation inside my core that says “Yes, that’s it!”

Now that we can “see” the shot, we are ready to start bringing our camera into the mix.  Taking the time to Pause, ask the above questions and try different poses, gives you a chance to really dig in to the story of this couple and their personal energy with each other.

That family in the first 4 shots are clients of mine and I got to take photos of the baby when she was just 11 days old. I was so excited to see them again and my goodness how much the baby had grown!!! I didn’t get to work with them during the class but their photos turned out so amazing! I was so happy they agreed to be models, these photos are priceless! Great job ladies!!!

Hi there Me Ra, Your Wonderful Family, and Photography Staff,

Reading and seeing this whole site was so enjoyable. From you and your students giving us a how to see/visualize and propose settings with the family you are working with. Then giving us examples of who, when, how, and why. Very similar to what we are taught in class, with the use of photography rule of thirds, and how filling the frame makes exceptional captures. I have learned a great deal from the short lessons from of one your workshops and other information on your site. It helps me to correlate them together with other classes I have taken locally, as it also has helped me to understand more about professional portrait, mini family portrait sessions photography. This has been a wonderful treat to see such special and loving photography for this family.

Thank you so very much for offering many excerpts for those of us who are not able to attend your workshops. It is a terrific resource for all of us with you, your husband, students and staff coaching us in easy to understand pieces. I will be practicing my reflexes from now on in manual focus, mode and aperture mode with my Sony book at my side for reference. At least until I am confident enough to remember on my own with practicing over and over.

    Thanks Again,
    Rosemarie/aka Rosearodoe
