MORE Magical Light Photo Results from Week 2!

Me Ra Koh

Anyone need a dose of inspiration?  Check out these photo assignment results from Week 2 of “How to Capture Magical Light!”

One of the questions I’m most often asked is “What time of day is the best light to shoot?”  Well Week 2’s exercise sent these women on a photo adventure to find their answer.  Our focus was about becoming more aware of the changing light around us.  This next photo was a little later in the evening.  Gorgeous photo and so fun to see how dynamic and rich light can evolve in one evening.  We go from a more white/gold color of light to a soft yellow and blue hues with the water in the background.  Bea, you have such a wonderful eye!  Thank you for letting me share your work girl!  You are rocking it!

I had to share Bea’s excitement after Julie and I critiqued her photos.  “It was such a fun and emotion filled assignment. I usually go out there for sessions and take a lot of pictures by instinct. This time I was AWARE. Aware of the moment, the light, the subject, the sky, the backgrounds, the camera settings, the, the, the everything. TY so much for your feedback. What an amazing experience this has been.” Bea’s instincts are so dialed in.  Her work is beautiful.  But I love that we are never done learning, growing, unfolding into a deeper awareness.  So much of capturing magical light is developing an awareness of how to find it, where to look and what to look for.  To shoot, being AWARE, wow–changes everything.  Happy accidents start turning into consistent shooting!  (yeah Bea!)

This next photo was captured by Molly.  A former CONFIDENCE graduate, it’s been wonderful to see her hone her lighting techniques throughout the course.  I love how the golden light is warm, wrapping it’s arms around her, and the soft pink of her dress with the accent blue ribbon of the doll’s hair, oh my goodness, everything came together on this photo.

Molly, your work has grown leaps and bounds since your first beginnings as a mama/baby model at our DC Workshop three years ago!  LOL!  🙂

We have all levels in this class, and every single woman has pushed herself out of her comfort zone.  Our goal has been to experience progress not perfection.  I was telling the ladies in the forum that I’m so honored with how much they have brought to the class.  You tend to get out how much you are willing to put in, and these ladies have dove in with both feet.  Check out this precious moment by Claire.

This is the kind of photo that is framed and kept forever. I’m so moved by it. I love how she framed the moment with a bit of the tree overhead. I love how he is positioned behind her, I can almost hear him soothing her–maybe even singing to her. And most of all, I LOVE that look on her baby’s face and that SWEET hand reaching up to daddy’s face. Oh my goodness Claire, again, an amazing moment you captured.

This is only a handful from Week 2!  I’m so excited to get working on the critiques for Week 3!

And here is the fun news!   We will be offering this class, “How to Capture Magical Light” again in August!  YEAH!  If you missed the first round, you can join us in August!  The four week class begins August 1st!  We’ve reserved a handful of seats for our CONFIDENCE Grads.  We are opening registration today for those lovely ladies.  But make sure you are signed up for our newsletter.  We will be releasing the remaining seats to all of our newsletter peeps early next week!

Coming next week…some fun 4th of July surprises for YOU!

Hands down, my favorite part of critiquing student photos for “How To Capture Magical Light” is women discovering what their “style” or “knack” seems to be naturally in how they capture a photo. When we are starting out, we may have a sense of what we like in our favorite photos we’ve taken, but not really know how to define it (or how to do it again on purpose!) I can’t tell you what an honor it is to get to say things like “You have an amazing feel for capturing motion. Did you know that?” or “I could tell just by looking at the thumbnails of your “homework” that your sense of composition and line is fabulous.” “The poses you capture your children in are perfectly graceful. You have a graceful eye.” So many of us have these capabilities but don’t even know it. It is THRILLING to see everyone develop so much after just 3 weeks (yep, I’ve peeked at some of the week 3 assignments that have been turned in). 🙂
