Photo Contests!

You Vote!! It's the "New Beginnings" Photo Contest Finalists!

Me Ra Koh

This was a wonderful contest theme! I can’t tell you how many fantastic and inspiring photos we received. Every image was touching, especially the stories you wrote with your images. I really needed the help of others on narrowing it down to five, but I think you’re going to be inspired with what we’ve got!

Vote for one of these five finalists by leaving your vote in the comments!

Finalist #1: Big Brother Shay and Baby Sister Tess, by Kelly (proud mom). Kelly wrote that she had butterflies in her stomach the first few times she watched her two children connect. Witnessing those moments of new beginnings between siblings is breath taking. Wonderful photo Kelly!

Finalist #2: First Day of School, by Stacie (another proud mom). The anxiety that goes into a first day is familiar to so many of us, and I love the way Stacie captured her girls. The composition on this shot is really eye catching.

Finalist #3: Portrait of Me, by Michelle. This was one of the sweetest emails/entries. “2008 is going to be the year that I try and find out who I am other than “mom” and what excites me. With a 5 month old, 3 year old and 5 year old..it is not going to be easy, but I need to do it. Armed with my new camera and attending your photography workshop, I am ready to learn more about something I love..photography…Other things that the photograph shows is the never ending pile of laundry that is the bain of my existence. This year, I am just going to let it go and not worry about the house always being perfect..the laundry will be there tomorrow (and the next day) but my kids won’t always be little.” Michelle also has a great blog called “A Mom’s Life“.

Finalist #4: A Piano for Christmas, by Judy (a proud and patient mom :)). Judie wrote that friends of the family decided it was time for their home to have some music. So on Christmas day a new beginning took place and the house has never been so full of music. 🙂

Finalist #5: New Nephew at 1 week, by Judith (proud auntie!). Judith wrote that this little one not only brings a beautiful new life, but Judith also has a whole new level of closeness with her sister as sisters, mothers and women.

There you have it! The five wonderful finalists for the New Beginnings, January Photo Contest! Submit your vote in the comments for the winner (with a few words on why you chose their photo) and you may possibly win the random voter award!!

Prizes?!!! Three ways to win!! 🙂 (why do I feel like a game show host as I type this? :))

The winning Finalist will get $100 credit to one of our 2008 workshops!

AND a Random Voter will receive $100 credit for a 2008 workshop too!

AND, AND…there is a third way to win something!!

I just got my new 2008 calendar in the mail. I”m so excited!!! It’s my favorite calendar by Nikki McClure (beautiful papercuts with inspiring images and words).

We’re going to pick a SECOND random voter for this contest and send you your own copy of this awesome 2008 calendar!

You’ve got until this Wednesday night at 8pm ET time to vote!! Tell your friends and family to vote for you b/c we even still have a spot for you in this weekend’s Seattle Workshop!! 🙂

  1. Amanda D says:

I vote for #1- Love the emotion between the two! It appears that the baby already is fascinated and looking adoringly at his big brother.

  2. amber joy says:

I vote #3. I had two possibles, but this one just hits closer to home. I live in a very weird situation where my ‘me’ can get lost often, and I want to know ‘me’. This photo could have been me : p even down to the pile of laundry!

  3. Nicole Neff says:

My vote is #3. Her candidness is so refreshing. And I love it that she chose to put the laundry in the background of her picture. So often we women get overwhelmed by taking care of “stuff” that we forget take care of ourselves. When we allow some time for ourselves, it feeds into other areas of our lives to bring others happiness as well. It’s a win-win for everyone. Good luck with your endeavor, Michelle!

  4. Jess says:

I vote for number 4. All of the pictures were beautiful, but this one stood out because of the bright, strong contrast of colors, the level at which is was taken, and how adorable those fat little fingers are pressing down four piano keys at once! Hurrah for music!

    Thanks, MeRa, for these contests!

  5. Michelle says:

My vote is for #5. It is actually quite hard to get an infant all snuggle in tight like that (not to mention balancing on a tower of towels!). Nice job.

I’ve got a sister who was due with her first baby last Saturday so I am waiting to share the joy of motherhood with her too!

  6. Leah says:

I seem to like number 2 the best, probably because the first day of school was a big deal for me and my little guys too, every year 🙂

  7. Kelly R says:

I vote for #1. I love the colors and angle of the photo. Very touching.

  8. jon ezelle says:

I vote for #5. I liked its softness and quietness. I felt the awe of a new-born baby in this photo. Thank you.

  17. Detra says:

I love #1 and #4! There will be so much noise in their houses from now on! ;-} My vote goes to #3, the self portrait. I have a whole new plan for myself as well in 2008, and this reminds me of me — without me in the photo of course! Good luck Michelle — and I have SO much laundry at my house!!! LOL

  18. Susan L. says:

My vote is for #1. You can see the love between the siblings in that picture. I love how mom captured them gazing at each other.

    Well done!

  19. Kelly R says:

I think that #1 says so much. It seems to convey wonderful emotion in addition to be a beautiful subject and almost artistic in its format,

  20. Annmarie says:

I vote for #5. There is nothing more innocent and serene than a sleeping newborn baby. The picture is beatifully done and fills me with a sense of peace and love. There is something so special about a bond between mothers that you just cannot explain.

  21. Jen says:

  23. Amy B says:

My vote is for #1. The expression on the baby’s face is priceless.

  29. Martha says:

#1 gets my vote! Who can resist those rapturous faces?

  30. Kamala says:

Oops! I meant to say #3! Sorry!

  31. Misty says:

#1 is so precious…from the eyelashes of the big brother to the sweet fascination of the baby brother. This is just a priceless shot! =)

  32. Misty says:

Oh dear…I obviously am trying to do too much right now. I seriously meant to say baby sister. Honest I did! Yikes! =)

I vote for #5. This photo captures the sense of awe and wonder at new life.

I have to vote for Finalist #3! Not only is her story behind the photo ring so close to home but it is also a great picture! I love the red wall and how she incorporated the laundry and blurred it to show that it apart of her life but the camera is in focus and her not the laundry. Great photo!
    I really love them all!

  45. Michelle says:

What a nice way to start my week and see myself as one of the finalists. I’m not going to vote for myself, so I will pick #1, a beautiful photo of a beautiful moment.

My vote is for Michelle #3.
Alot of us mom’s that read this site can relate and feel the same way as her. I like the color in her scarf and the angle she’s holding the camera.

Love all of the finalists, but #3 hits close to home and is a great reminder for me to “fold less, shoot more.” (When I was little, My mom used to tape herself reminder notes to the walls: “the house doesn’t care, go play with your kids!”) Now where’s my camera…

  107. Julie Watts says:

This was tough, but #1 makes me think of how many hundreds and thousands of looks those two little people will give each other over their lifetimes, about how we know every nuance of our siblings’ personalities arguably better than we know anybody else. But before the adventure of their lives together begins, it all starts with a look at each other like this…wonderfully captured!

  116. Cathee says:

  127. #5-Super cute and sweet! It is a real moment and I like how close she got to her subjects.

I LOVE Nikki McClure and I have been using her calendars for years. I was planning on featuring her on my blog this week. She has a great baby journal available called the first 1000 days. That journal with a hand knitted cap is the best baby shower gift! You can get the journal on: http://www.buyolympia.com

22 years later, it is still displayed in my bedroom.
So, even though they are all winners with such stunning photographs, my vote goes to #3 this time.

  134. Kara Lee says:

I’m voting for #1! I love the lighting and the way the siblings are looking at each other. They almost have that mischievous look on their faces like Mom so watch out–someday these two will probably be quite the pair.

  135. Todd says:

I vote for number 3 because it is my wife and if I don’t, I’ll be in big trouble.

  138. Nicole Matty says:

    #3

While I enjoyed all of the photographs and their stories, Michelle’s shot really resonated with me. It’s all too easy to lose yourself in your
“Momminess” and then years from now look back and wonder where the time went…they grow up so fast! Afterall, whose favorite childhood memories are about how spotless the house was or how the laundry was always neatly put away!

    Cheers to you Michelle #3!

#1…I love the way you can almost hear little Tess’s cooing as she looks at her big brother’s face.

  140. Sean says:

#1 stands apart in it’s creativeness. The black & white leaves it stoic. It is by far less pre-concieved than the others. It exceeds in its originality and purity.

I think new beginnings and feelings often come about when an obstalce or burden is over come. Which allows something new to arise and make it’s self apparent in all aspects of life. I feel very few things capture this, in the way coping with anxiety on the first day of school does. Which is perfectly displayed in this entry.

  196. ingreen says:

#1 is my choice, for the simple fact that unlike the other photos which are obviously staged,#1 is spontaniously capturing a singular moment. Great job Kelly!

    Go #1!!!

  198. Reid says:

I’ve always felt the best way to experience and bring upon new things is by overcoming obstacles or burdens. It allows you to see and feel things differently and becomes apparent in other aspects of life. To me this picture perfectly captures the anxiety of coping with “the first day of school”. In my opinion one of the more significant trials in a child’s life. Very well done #2.

I think that all of the photos are fantastic, but #3 resonates with me most of all. The bold colors, the statement, the Mom ever behind the camera, capturing all of her children’s precious moments and at the same time figuring her role as mom/woman/photograher/observer/participatnt. I think Michelle did an amazing job of summing it up, as the expression says… “a picture is worth a thousand words”!
