How Families Connect – Dallas Family Photographer – Me Ra Koh Portraits

I love to figure out how families connect. Every family has their own personal touchpoints where laughter, joy and safety thrive. As the kids get older, these touchpoints may evolve or stay the same. For this dad and daughter, it has stayed the same since she was three years old.

What Will Dad Miss Most?

Whenever we have a high school senior involved in the photo shoot, we ask the parents what they’ll miss most when their senior is gone. Dad said her voice. Ever since she was a little girl, he’s been playing the guitar and singing with her. Recently, they’ve been leading worship together at church. And he loves the way she looks at him, as if to say “Isn’t this great dad? I love doing this with you!” I knew we had to capture this dynamic for them.

When I asked Jennifer to tell me what she loves most about her dad, she said “I never want to stop worshiping with him.” (tears)

Gentle Giant

Oh my goodness, I LOVED talking to these two brothers! Since the youngest was a little young to do a Discovery Call, I pulled the two aside before we started the photo shoot. I asked the oldest what he loved most about being a big brother. Austin said he loves having “a chance to help shape his little brother’s future and his career.” Isn’t that AWE-mazing?!

And then Jordan looked up at him and said “Thank you, Austin.” I’m telling you, the sweetest moment EVER between two brothers!

When I asked Jordan what he loved about his big brother, he said he loves holding on to his leg and being pulled around the house. They both started laughing. That’s when I knew we had to capture this!

Safety is one powerful way in how families connect. I love this portrait of big brother, a gentle giant, just laughing as his little brother grabs hold of his leg. Priceless.

Favorite for How Families Connect

Jennifer and I had a wonderful conversation on the phone before the photo shoot. She was in the midst of big changes with moving out and going to college. Her baby brother was heavy on her heart. She wanted him to always know how much she loves Jordan, even though she won’t be home. When I asked Jordan how he loves to connect with his big sister, he said TICKLES! The parents installed this beautiful moment in their kitchen nook so Jordan can see it everyday when he’s working on school work.

Tummy to Tummy

Mom and Jennifer even have a name for how they connect. It’s a specific hug called “tummy to tummy”. Jennifer says she cherishes their “tummy to tummy” hug more than ever with being away at college. (As a mom of a college student, I know how this mama feels.)

All Begins and Ends Here

How families connect all begins and ends with parents. We had the privilege of talking to the kids before the photo shoot, asking them what they admire most about their parents.

Jennifer loves how her mom’s face still lights up when dad comes home from work. The boys said they love their parents unconditional love for each other. All the kids notice how mom and dad make time for each other and stick together in both happy and hard times. The word devoted came up with their kids. Just beautiful.

But mom wasn’t sure about being photographed. Most women are nervous. That is one of the reasons I love our work. It’s a transformational experience for them. When Brian revealed this fine art portrait in their home, mom was in tears. She loved it so much, she had Brian install it in their bedroom where she can see it every morning when she wakes up and every night when she goes to bed.
