Thoughts on a Subtitle?

Me Ra Koh

For DVD 2, the title is Beyond the Green Box. I’ve had the working subtitle be Understanding Your Digital SLR.

Just wondering, do you think the term “SLR” is confusing for parents and aspiring photographers who are new to their cameras? If it is I’d rather scrap it.

Would it be better to have the subtitle read Understanding Your Digital Camera?

Thanks!

I think that would be a great title, especially since many point-and-shoot cameras now have manual controls. I was taking a photo with someone’s Canon S5, and saw that you could control shutter speed and aperture. While I think getting great bokeh might me difficult with a P&S lens, the principles in your DVD would still apply. I can’t wait for your DVD to come out!

  2. Amanda D says:

I think it depends on what your DVD will focus on. If it is ONLY relevant to a SLR camera, then I think it needs to be in the subtitle. If it can apply to both, then I would go with out.

If somebody is buying a dSLR, they most likely know what it is. If somebody buys/own a P&S, they most likely don’t know what an SLR camera is.

Example, I attended a short class called Learning about your dSLR. Everybody there had a SLR, except one poor woman who showed up with a P&S. She’d never thought to look up what SLR stood for or if her camera was one.

  3. Patricia says:

Well when I started college(for photography)I had no clue what a SLR was let alone what it stood for or that I even needed one. If you are talking about the general public most of them probably aren’t going to have an SLR those that do probably will know what it is. IF your DVD is specific to SLRs then yeah I agree it should be somewhere in there.

I think that ‘Understanding Understanding Your Digital Camera’ is the best title! I was passionatly interested in taking great photos of my kids long before I knew what SLR stood for.

I LOVE your 1st DVD, and I can’t wait for the next one!!! Thank you for making my scrapbook pages better – it all begins with a great photograph!

    YOU ROCK ME RA!

  5. Hey Me Ra,
In addition to Amanda and Patricia’s response, that it depends on the contents of the DVD, I think it also depends on the target market you’re trying to reach. If the DVD is catered for the “aspiring photographer” then “SLR” shouldn’t be a problem. If not, and your target market is for the average family with a digital camera, then taking out “SLR” would make more sense.

But whatever you decide, I’m sure it’ll all work out! =)

btw- As soon as I picked up Lauren from the airport I blasted her with questions! hahah it was soo funny! It was awesome beacuse we were totally able to apply everything she learned and some of your tips (eg shooting into the sunlight) for a shoot we did the next day and the pics turned out so much better than we ever expected. It was our first shoot! We’re going to have the slideshow up in the next few days so drop by anytime!

We can’t wait for the advanced workshop!

I have ordered the DVD, but I have a Canon 5S is, which is a higher end point and shoot…it has manual controls, but I have a fixed zoom lens. I was hoping that I would be able to gleen some information about using those controls even though it isn’t a dSLR. If you think someone with a basic point and shoot can benefit from the DVD I would leave dSLR out of the subtitle. Just my 2 cents.

I like รขโ‚ฌล“Understanding Your Digital Cameraรขโ‚ฌย but I do agree that DSLR should be in the title. Maybe you can add a small video on your blog explaining what a DSLR is to your potential customers. I’ve been thinking of getting your videos as a gift for my wife, she is DSLR illiterate and knowing her she would appreciate seeing a 2 minute intro on what a DSLR is and is not, my 2 cents ๐Ÿ™‚

Many non-SLR digital cameras have manual mode now. If your DVD will also benefit those using a P&S with manual controls, then from a business perspective it would seem to make more sense to appeal to the broadest market possible? Is the DVD pushing manual control, or digital SLR’s, where we know the real magic is – in the lenses!?? Seems like you can’t really take full advantage of what lenses can deliver without having some knowledge of manual control. I vote for appealing to a broader range with a focus on manual control.. maybe a subtitle like: “Demystifying the Manual Modes on your Digital Camera” and then once you get people there, you can sell them on the full bounty – digital SLR’s and the myriad of lens options available!

How about having the subtitle read ‘Understanding your digital SLR camera’ ?!

It’s funny… when people want to talk about my camera and I say it’s a SLR… this blank look comes over their face. So, I just say “big heavy camera… big lens..” then they get it!

I guess I agree with most of the people posting here… if the DVD is going to be geared towards any digital camera then “understanding your digital camera” would be great, but if you are only going for dSLR’s then you should somehow specify that… I’d be bummed if I bought a DVD to help me take better pictures, and then come to find out I need to buy a different camera to do all that I learned.

    How about…
“How to REALLY use that Big Monster of a Camera!”

    Hee hee hee!

Well, like my sister so nicely stated above…remember I am the one that thought it was SIR! lol!!! I still laugh at myself when I think of that. ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. Pam says:

I can understand your concern over this. I would say to go with the SLR in the title because once you start talking about it, those with a point & shoot may be lost or feel they’ve been mislead.
Whatever you call it I KNOW it will be fantastic and it is SO WORTH waiting for!
I am still reviewing my first dvd and pick up something new each time I watch.
THANK YOU for your time, dedication, and generosity to share your incredible talent with others. I only wish I wasn’t in the midwest so I could attend the November party!

I agree, I think that “Understanding your Digital SLR camera” works well, and handles the problem of not scaring away people who don’t yet feel comfortable with the term “SLR”.

Also, if you are hoping to still reach “P&S” users too, you may want to leave SLR out of the title.

either way, can’t wait to see it ! hang in there ! sounds like you are getting to the home stretch !

  17. kaosong says:

I prefer DSLR. I hope it is not just a simple how to use your digital camera because I feel that DSLRs are so much different from point and shoots and most parent’s own P&S.

I am a beginner and took a class on digital photography and the class was 1/2 DSLRs and 1/2 P&S and I swear the P&S did not get their money’s worth. Their cameras didn’t even have most of the features that were on DSLRs. All it did was make them want a DSLR. I realize some P&S do have the features, but most parents don’t have those.

Definitely use DSLR in the title.

    Thank you.

  18. Jess Niles says:

My take is, if you don’t know what a SLR is then the dvd is probably not for you. People who have an interest in photography and are looking to take better pictures either have an SLR or aspire to have one, I think. So my vote is for the original title! (oh, and I’m a parent & aspiring photographer!)

  19. Liza says:

    Me Ra,

I think that “Understanding Your Digital SLR” may be a little tricky to those that have no clue as to what a SLR even is, but “Understanding Your Digital Camera” also seems to me as an understatement. Those might feel that a ‘digital camera’ may be those that you just grap as a snap and shoot, therefore this is not the case. How about “Understanding Your Digital SLR Camera”? or something of that nature? Just a few thoughts…!
