Portrait of a Family’s Hope for the Future – Dallas Frisco Family Photographer – Me Ra Koh
Meet Justin, Anthony and Ethan – a family who is laying to rest a past full of difficult challenges and sadness as they turn their faces toward hope for the future.
UPDATE: THE IMPACT AND TRANSFORMATION
We had this blog post almost ready, and then we got a message from the dad. A week after their Rising Phoenix Experience, his youngest son went to the school counselor and asked to be put in honor classes! His dad texted, “Starting next semester, he will be in ALL HONORS and science honors+. He did this all by himself! It is not common for them to change schedules mid year, but he drove this all by himself!”
During their photo shoot, Ethan heard so many loved ones echo how SMART he is that he started BELIEVING IT and TOOK ACTION! Dad was in TEARS! And we are too! THIS is the impact of a Rising Phoenix Experience! It’s not just about the portraits but the words of LIFE they represent!
WHAT RESILIENCE LOOKS LIKE
These three are the epitome of resilience. They have endured unspeakable pain and grief as the dynamics of their family changed drastically. But the way they’ve picked up the pieces of a once-broken life and pulled themselves back together – stronger than ever, is nothing short of inspiring. Justin and his sons, Anthony and Ethan, are the portrait of hope in the face of adversity. They are kindness-amplified and live with unwavering faith. We are so excited to share with you their story. THIS is what resilience looks like.
A BOND OF BROTHERS
Childhood can be magical.. It shouldn’t be riddled with adult hardships, yet so often the messiness of grownups spills over into children’s lives. This can be so difficult for kids. It would be easy for them to spiral out of control, especially when they feel like they have no control over what’s happening in their lives. When Anthony and Ethan’s world was turned upside down, their dad, Justin, feared what it would do to his sons.
In the face of adversity, humans usually take one of two roads. One leads down a path that creates resilience and strength. The other leads down a darker road where so much sadness and bitterness lies. It’s incredible to watch someone emerge from their challenges stronger and wiser than before. It’s even more miraculous when they’re children do. Anthony and Ethan have faced emotions and truths that nobody would wish on someone’s childhood, yet have walked through it with supernatural grace, dignity and tenacity.
Having met Justin, we feel confident in saying they get this strength from their dad. They also have his compassion. Both brothers are wise beyond their years and so loving. This is something they both value about their family unit – they love each other fiercely!
WHAT ANTHONY LOVES ABOUT HIS BROTHER
Anthony feels like an older soul. At just 16 years old, his words are so incredibly wise. He speaks of his family and his brother with such love and reverence. You can absolutely feel the love he has for his family in every word and interaction.
Anthony describes his little brother, Ethan, as smart. “I’m sometimes speechless! His intelligence is not limited to school-smart but LIFE-smart. I just think, ‘Wow!’ I see something in Ethan that I don’t see in other people. He’s very genuine and alive. He knows so much about a lot of things: life, technology. I find myself going to him with questions – not always my dad! Ethan just surprises me all the time.”
We love that Anthony also describes Ethan as someone he can trust. He feels like he can call him over to bed and they just talk and talk. “Ethan is very alive. He’s very AWAKE as a person.” Such powerful words.
Anthony says, “We just flow well. We can have ups and downs but we are good together which makes me feel good inside. I know Ethan has my back. Whenever we’re going through a dark and scary time, I know we have each other. We’re brothers.”
WHAT ETHAN LOVES ABOUT HIS BROTHER
It is also hard for us to remember that Ethan is only 12 years old.. he is so smart and quick-witted! He describes his big brother as curious – he wonders about things and is always asking questions. He also says Anthony is smart and super fast to pick up on things. Ethan says that Anthony recently started a class on audio/video production and is already making edits!
These brothers are close. Justin tells us that Ethan and Anthony have a standing-tradition of chatting about their day around bedtime. We are hoping this closeness only deepens the older they get…what a gift.
Ethan loves being around his brother and dad. He says, “we’re close.. we go do stuff and share things with each other. We’re also loving.” At one point they ordered DoorDash and Ethan said, “It doesn’t matter what we do, I just enjoy doing it together.” Words every parent would love to hear from their children!
WHAT JUSTIN LOVES ABOUT HIS BOYS
Justin describes his family as peaceful and content with each other. He loves that they understand each other’s intricacies and that they are a great team, working together for a single goal. Their conflict is short lived. “I tell them not to linger on conflict.. and that men as we are, sometimes need space as men.”
Justin loves Anthony’s spiritual maturity. He says Anthony is solid, he grew up quickly but Justin is so very proud of him. He describes Anthony as technically-smart. Justin shares that Anthony has been serving with media at their church since he was 9 years old, stating, “I’m here to work, serve, whatever I can do!” Justin knows this attitude will give him life! He describes his eldest son as a truly solid, phenomenal kid.
Justin describes his youngest son as extremely bright, phenomenally smart and bright-minded. “Ethan thinks through every angle. He can achieve anything he puts his mind to. He did a presentation and used the same words I would have. I’m SO PROUD of him.” He also says that Ethan feels the highs and lows and experiences things significantly, because he thinks so pragmatically, step by step and logically.
“Ethan is learning to take charge of his life. His grades are all in the 90’s so I asked if he was even stimulated at school. Ethan mulled it over and a couple of weeks later I found out that he has met with the school counselor on his own to discuss this. I was super impressed with him for taking charge!”
WHAT THE BOYS LOVE ABOUT THEIR DAD
Anthony shares that he loves how easy-going his dad is. They speak the same language, on the same level and Justin just ‘gets’ Anthony. He says, “I can talk to him about anything, even when it’s a heavy situation. He’s trustworthy – my dad is a man of his word. I can depend on him if he says he’s going to get it done, he does. He’s reliable. These qualities stand out the most.”
Anthony says, “Our relationship is comforting. It’s my group of guys and no matter what happens, we’re going to be there for each other. We have a good time, we all make each other laugh.. it reminds me of a friend group but in a different way. We all respect each other and it’s AFFIRMING.”
Ethan knows that his dad really cares. He says, “If something goes wrong, he’ll be there with open arms to help. It’s how he is.” He also describes Justin as helpful and joyful. Ethan loves their dynamic! He enjoys hanging out with his dad, just talking. They make each other laugh. So important!
IT TAKES A VILLAGE
We’ve all heard the adage, “it takes a village”. Justin and the boys know this as TRUTH, first-hand! Justin recognizes how hard life has been for his boys at times. He’s done his best to surround him with adults who love them unconditionally and whom they can look up to. This group of guys had so many people willing to speak on their behalf and share with us how and why they are so very special.
We spoke with family friends, Trish, Kara, Lyric, Chuck, Darren and Randy. We have pages and pages of life-affirming notes/words for each one and we can tell you how very passion ALL of them are about this family. What’s even more beautiful, is that in their own way, each of them told us the same story. They all described Justin, Anthony and Ethan very similarly which tells us how incredibly authentic they are in how they live their lives and present themselves to the world.
WORDS FOR ANTHONY
Justin said that Anthony’s smile is TIMELESS – it lights up a room! (We have to agree 100%) He wants Anthony to look at these portraits and be reminded of what he is capable of – anything and everything he puts his mind to. He wants him to be reminded of the awesomeness that God has placed within him.
Chuck describes Anthony as intelligent, quick to ask questions and has a fierce desire to understand and learn. He also describes him as joyful – someone who wants the most out of life. And he says Anthony is influential. “He doesn’t realize it yet, but he’s influential. People are drawn to him more than he realizes.” Chuck says that Anthony’s superpower is seeking and finding the answer and he’s willing to ask for help/permission as needed. Ambition and humility are a powerful combination!
Kara describes Anthony as self-motivated, disciplined, passionate and loving. She says they serve together at church and she remembers Anthony missing a couple of Sundays at one point and the team didn’t even realize how much Anthony was doing for everyone! Kara believes Anthony’s superpower is his ability to connect with people. He may not understand what others are going through but he’s empathetic. He has the ability to feel deeply. She’s hoping these portraits help him to see himself as others see him and remind him how special he is. She doesn’t want him to be critical or hard on himself, but rather give himself as much grace as he gives to others.
“THIS KID IS UNSTOPPABLE!”
Trish – wow, Trish’s words for Anthony were really powerful. She first and foremost shares about his Godliness. She says that Anthony is very big on putting God first. Even when he’s on the phone with his girlfriend, he makes sure he takes time to pray with her. That is just so impressive. Trish also describes him as kind and so smart. He’s reliable; he shows up and is willing to jump in where he’s needed.
Trish recalls a time in children’s media where everything was going awry and everyone is scrambling to figure out what is happening. She remembers Anthony popping his head in the door and just said, “I’m going to take care of children’s.” And 10 minutes later, things are fixed! Trish believes Anthony’s superpower is his intelligence! “This kid is unstoppable!”
Lyrick’s top 3 qualities for Anthony are considerate, generous/kind and funny. “He’s very big on thinking about how a situation can affect everybody in the picture. He’s focused on making sure he’s considering other people’s feelings. Anthony is always a helping hand and he cheers me up and makes me laugh when I’m sad. He takes time to make jokes and make others laugh.”
Lyrick tells us about a time where they really wanted Anthony to be at their last football game. Anthony went out of his way to make arrangements, coordinating with their dad for a ride so he could be there to watch their last drill team performance. “He went through so much effort to be there because he knew it was important to me. He gave me the biggest smile when I saw him! Anthony brightens up every room he comes in to and has such positive energy. He makes others feel happy and that is truly his superpower.”
WORDS FOR ETHAN
Lyrick describes Ethan as so sweet with a kind heart. They remember a time where Anthony wanted a particular book and showed it to them on the phone. Ethan grabbed the phone and paid for the book, then proclaimed, “I got it for you.” So sweet! Also, Lyrick says Ethan is super funny, much like his brother. And has good character. Even though middle school can be a tough transition, Ethan is dedicated to having good grades and maintaining good character. He’s serious about not changing himself for others around him. “He’s a staying a good person and that’s a big deal!”, Lyrick says.
Kara says Ethan is mature for his age. She loves his outlook on life! She also says he really gets into whatever his interest is at the time. He throws himself ‘all in’ to learning. “Whatever he chooses for himself in high school and beyond, the world will be a better place because of him!” Kara also says he has perseverance. His superpower according to Kara? He talks a lot (in a good way). Lol He’s introverted but once you get to know him, he can talk your ear off!
“THE WORLD WILL BE A BETTER PLACE BECAUSE OF HIM!”
When we asked Trish about Ethan, her response was precious. She said, “He’s so cute – absolutely adorable. I just want to take him home and keep him forever.” Haha! Trish loves his sarcasm – he’s hilarious! She also describes him as intelligent. “The way he picks up on everything. He’s highly intelligent, just like Anthony. Anything Ethan wants to do, he’s going to be able to do it.” Along the same lines, Trish says Ethan’s superpower is being able to figure anything and everything out. Even if he’s frustrated, she hopes he knows that it’s only temporary and he has the ability to make it to the other side!
WORDS FOR JUSTIN
Darren describes Justin as resilient, tenacious, loving and spiritual man. Sound familiar? The apples don’t fall far from the tree! These next words are so powerful – “Justin has done all that any man can do to try to maintain relationships and provide a loving home for his boys. He is truly someone who has done more than I think I could ever do. He’s doing all that he can to raise his boys into becoming young men.” Darren says that Justin’s superpower is his authenticity. “He always gives people his authentic self. Regardless of what’s going on with him, he’s always authentic.” Darren hopes that these portraits will remind Justin that he and his sons have such a special bond together and that they can hold on to each other for strength and unity, in power and love.
Randy says that Justin is a dedicated, loving father. He’s a good, hardworking man who is intelligent and spiritually-minded. He’s a warrior! “Even in the most adverse situation when it’s quite the opposite of what was expected and has been difficult, Justin is single-minded in making sure his boys are okay. In the times we’ve been together and talk about his circumstances, he’ll voice his frustration but then his perseverance shines through and he’ll say, ‘This is something I have to do and move forward.'”
Randy says Justin’s superpower is his love for his boys, which helps him refocus and work harder to achieve his goals. He hopes these portraits remind him of the love he and his boys share and of his steadfastness in their lives.
“HE ALWAYS GIVES PEOPLE HIS AUTHENTIC SELF”
We asked Kara what her top 3 qualities are for Justin and she said perseverance, supportive and inclusive. She says that he doesn’t allow what’s going on in his personal life to show in hopes that it doesn’t negatively affect the boys. Even if he doesn’t have the resources, Justin will always find a way to support his sons and their interests. He wants to create opportunities for them. He also initiates spending time with his friends outside of church so the boys have a good support system. Kara says Justin’s superpower is his faith! No matter what happens, he doesn’t stay down for long, he moves forward, trusting God.
Trish says that Justin is very godly and very patient. She says he stands firm in his faith and it sines through everything that he and the boys have been through. Trish love the way the boys describe their father – they talk about how he has directed them with patience, kind words regardless of the situation, and taught them to be positive and kind to others. She says, “With the things they have told me he’s taught them I’ll just be like, ‘Yeah, your dad is right. You need to listen to him.'” Justin practices what he preaches. He’s very careful with his words and is an amazing father.
HOPE FOR THE FUTURE
After speaking to Justin, Anthony and Ethan and their tribe, a theme emerged.. they all have an enormous amount of hope for the future. Yes, they have been through terrible things. They have each been hurt. Each has dealt with more than they deserve and they have done it with more grace than most can muster. Yet after all is said and done, all three have emerged stronger, more resilient and with an incredible HOPE. They hope for a peaceful future, one full of light, love and joy. We are praying fervently for their family and hope that you’ll join us in lifting them all up!
Justin, we hope you realize what an outstanding job you’re doing raising your sons. Anthony, you’ve been a solid, loving example to Ethan AND your father. Ethan, your joy and mind are a gift to everyone around you!
Our prayer is that you each move forward, into the next chapter with unwavering faith, unfailing love in your hearts and never stop working toward the future you want. We have no doubt that wonderful things await each of you and we pray that these portraits are a reminder of your hope for the future and your unbreakable bond with each other. With your love and God beside you, you CANNOT FAIL.
