The power of photography amazes me. Not only am I given the opportunity to capture someone’s story, but I become captured by their story. And in some mysterious way, healing flows.
Meet Baby Lila from NYC. She is a miracle angel. (I love her sweet, little hands.)
I was given the honor of doing a photo shoot with baby Lila and her mom, Caroline. But this wasn’t any portrait shoot. This was an incredibly moving experience that captured my spirit.
When Lila was a four week old infant, she and her mom were in a horrific car accident. A truck diver fell asleep behind the wheel, and the collision caused Lila and Caroline’s car to flip seven times. Seven times. Lila was tucked in her newborn car seat and came away from the accident with hardly a scratch. Caroline was a different story. She was torn from her baby and helicoptered to the nearest trauma center. She had broken her neck in several places and was taken right into surgery.
After the surgery, Caroline had to undergo an intense recovery process. Part of the process has been wearing a constricting neck brace 24 hrs a day.
So much happened all at once. Her long beautiful, black hair was shaved in surgery. Her vision of being able to rock Lila in her arms would be put off for months. I cannot imagine the pain her heart has endured. And yet, she is still full of love. And her love washes over Lila.
When we did the photo shoot, Caroline had just been told by her doctor that she could take off her neck brace for small increments of time–maybe 7-10 minutes. A couple weeks before the shoot, she was given permission to hold her Lila for small amounts of time. And as you can imagine, with all the trauma, they had not had photos taken of Lila.
Having heard their story before I arrived in NY, my heart was filled with a desire to capture the beautiful connection between Caroline and her baby girl. I wanted to capture the story of their intimacy. Even though the first four months of Lila’s life had been very different than what Caroline had expected, I wanted the images to prove that their love and connection was deeper than either could fathom. That Caroline’s neck brace wasn’t a distraction but a part of the miracle. That the scar on Caroline’s neck didn’t distract because Caroline’s inner strength glowed–filling the home.
As photographers, these are the amazing stories we get to be a part of. We get to meet miracles. We get to be reminded that all hope is not lost, even when everything is not what we expected. We get to be inspired by the depth of love, despite the circumstances that threatened to break it apart.
Dear Caroline, thank you for allowing me into your home to capture you and Lila. It was a honor to hear your story and capture the beautiful connection you have with Lila. She is an angel Caroline. She is a miracle in the purest form. And so are you. My experience and time with you has forever changed me. My spirit shall never forget it. Much love, Me Ra

One last favorite: the classic, precious mullet.
The slideshow music was another great piece I found at Triple Scoop Music. We were able to pay for a license of the music. The title alone, Angel Eyes, seemed to be the perfect fit for Baby Lila.
Enjoy! And get your Kleenex out. The words of the song combined with the images had me tearing up as I created the slideshow. You will see how wide and deep the beauty reaches between this mother and daughter.

MeRa you are amazing at capturing moments that just make the viewer (even someone who does not know this family) amazed, in love, and touched by the subjects!wow!
Me Ra that was so powerful beyond words…and I am in tears right now. What a miracle that they are both ok. Mom and baby are gorgeous and your pictures capture their love so gracefully. What a gift you have given them!
What a beautiful way to start the morning – celebrating the miracles in life. Thank you for sharing these beautiful images and their story.
Priceless
beautiful beyond words. my heart fills with joy for this woman who has the beautiful images to cherish forever …
And THAT is what I love about being a photographer. Being able to capture raw emotion, love, devotion! Thank you for being such a powerful teacher of story telling!! π
Very, very moving.
What a beautiful and powerful story of overcoming such a traumatic experience! I love that you included the shots of the mom with the neck brace – it shows what this mom went through and how much she loves her baby (at a time when she could just feel sorry for herself). Someday that baby will see these pictures and realize how strong her mommy was!
I was a little teary reading the story, got the the photo in the slideshow were mom is kissing baby’s shoulder…and oh man….the tears came with sobs. What a beautiful family. Lila has to be the prettiest baby I have ever seen.
If I were not at work, I’d be bawling! It is a truly wonderful miracle to have a mother survive such a traumatic accident with her infant child.
The images are so beautiful, Me Ra. I love how you’re able to transform anything (a shag rug, a sofa, a wooden dining table) into part of such a gorgeous photo with such an adorable baby.
Me Ra, The gentle way you captured the bond between this beautiful mom and her baby is breathtaking! It touched me so deeply. Even if there were no words, your images could tell the story and still bring tears to my eyes. Thank you for sharing it!
Wow..that is one of the most beautiful slideshows I have ever seen. What a gift you gave that beautiful mom who has been through so much.
Incredibly beautiful Me Ra and Brian. The photo of mom kissing the back of baby Lila’s shoulder, it says so much. You captured their essense in these photos, I can just feel their love. Sending prayers for continued healing for this beautiful family~
I’m so glad that this slideshow and powerful story is connecting with you, like it did with me. Caroline is an amazing woman. My time with her showed me how fierce a mother’s love can be. She has fought so hard to recover, and yet her love for Lila is stronger than ever. She is an amazing woman, mom, wife. She is simply amazing. And Lila, what a miracle she is.
Thanks for all your comments! I know that it has to bless Lila’s family. And they deserve all the blessings in the world.
xoxoxo, Me Ra
thanks for sharing caroline’s story of strength and love through the pictures you took. they are filled with joy, peace, and love. i love seeing the mothers with their children.
I can barely see what I’m typing through all the tears welling up. A truly beautiful family and you captured the love between these two so well. God Bless them!!!
Powerfully moving Me Ra! There was a photo of a Caroline kissing the back of Lila’s shoulder… WOW… that’s when the tears welling up in my eyes gave way and streamed down my cheeks. How does their story not change every person’s spirit. Thank you for sharing it with all of us.

So sweet! Lila is the strongest four month old baby I’ve ever seen. Sitting up, nearly crawling…Wow! I bet I know where she gets her strength! Her beauty most definitely comes from her gorgeous mom!
Beautiful as always MeRa!
yep i just had this same experience saturday…
the baby was in NICU and didn’t get to come home for a while….the dad broke his wrist and because he is in construction…he was struggling to get work/etc while being in the healing process…and then his wife who newly had a baby, broke her rib. I have to tell you…i convinced her to take a photo w/ her new baby…and itz def. a fave of mine. π (and of course, hers now)

didn’t know how else to link it! π
sweet stuff, and i haven’t even finished their photos yet, but this was one of my favs.
poor mama and baby – what a blessing that the baby came away without any major injuries – i cant believe that story – and how fortunate that caroline still gets to be with her – – how fast things can change and turn π
wishing you a good recovery, caroline! your daughter is lovely!
Mera, I as beautiful as your black and whites and muted tones are, I love your full color images – something about them is so soothing and creamy – they instantly make me feel calm and ‘at home’ – so good – the first and last ones are my faves. π
This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
