Breathe In…

Me Ra Koh

Take a moment and think of all the things you juggle. Or what about the dozens of errands you run with “this” type of craziness in the backseat…

If you had to list all the many hats you wear, what would your list say? Mine sounds something like, wife, mom, dinner idea comer-upper and cooker :), daughter, big sister to two little brothers, friend, photographer, writer, speaker, producer, and on and on and on. Sometimes I find myself giving out more than I have to give.

I love giving.

Giving is not something I drag my feet over. But I find that when I only give out, when I only exhale, I sometimes forget to breathe in.

Is anyone forgetting to breathe in lately?

Our little family continues to grow, and the business continues to explode. It can all be a bit much sometimes. As I was working on the upcoming 101 Kit, The Mom’s Survival Guide, I remembered my business coach challenging me to carve out daily rituals within my daily and weekly schedules. Daily rituals of breathing in helps us stay filled up and in touch with our own needs so we can keep growing.

These little rituals can be simple. And yet, they are so vital so I can breathe in, especially during this holiday season.

Here are some I’m trying:

-running away to a cafe for 1 hour to spend time writing

-swimming laps (water always speaks so much healing to me, anyone else feel this way?)

-walking to the Yoga studio for a class, instead of driving–even if it’s raining. Here is Pascaline demonstrating her latest Yoga move for all of you. 🙂

-reading for 30 minutes before bed

(one of my favorite books these days)

-making my own carrot juice for breakfast and lunch (this is one of my favorite daily rituals when we’re not traveling!)

-lighting a candle on my desk as I begin working (last night Brian and I lit a bunch of candles on the table for dinner and turned out all the other lights except the Christmas tree. it was dreamy to have dinner with the kids by candlelight. I felt my soul breathing in as the conversation spun a web of total surprise.)

What are ways you’re breathing in? I’d love to here, as I’m sure many others would.

I know that life can often feel blurry. The moments are so sweet, but they fly away so fast. The kids grow taller when I’m not looking, and the days seem to sprint by instead of walk. I feel tempted to shut down and cry because I want every thing to stop—for just a few moments. Creating daily and weekly rituals has been my way of stopping, slowing down and remembering to breathe.

See if you can find some way to step away today and breathe deep. You give so much that you need to give to yourself.

We’re depending on you to give to yourself for selfish reasons. There is only one you, and you running on empty means the world sees less of your magic. Not an option dear friend. Not an option.

Much Love, Me Ra

    I love this post!

Right now, I’m running around trying to pack for a three week trip, and trust me…I really needed a little reminder to stop and breathe. Thanks!

I too have always found it helpful to have a few daily rituals. Among mine: a morning cup of tea while I listen to a favorite CD (and yes, I confess I often find myself singing along), taking Katie for a walk even when its cold, gardening (it’s just so helpful to know that my work even in the winter will result in bright blooms before I know it!), yoga…and finally one that I’ve slcked on butm that I love, making an entry into my thankful journal before I go to sleep at night.

I know little rituals are easy to overlook in all the choas, but man do they make a huge difference. I really believe these activities make me a a happier, more productive, and pleasant person to be around so how could I ever make a case for not including them in my day! 🙂

GREAT post! I too have many hats as we all and do, and have learned how so very important it is to take a breather and allocate special time for yourself. Sometimes it’s a struggle but I enjoy –

    A kick butt workout

    Scrapbooking

Grabbing a latte and spending time at barnes with a girlfriend

Reading a book and writing in my notebook before bed

Spending one on one quality time with my son

Driving into the city for gelato on sundays

There are many more but even doing just a couple little ritual “me” things a week help me overall to feel more accomplished and be a happier me!

Marianne – your site looks amazing! You did I great job, it’s so fun to see it live you should be very proud of yourself!

As I sit here reading your post, I burst into complete tears. With a recent ending of an engagement and my grandfather and a dear friend passing this year…the holidays have turned a bit ‘Hum Bug’ for me. Sometimes it hurts to breathe…but today, I did. I’m reminded that I need to stop and reflect on all the positive in my life. I am a great friend, a photographer, niece, grand/daughter, sister, triathlete, employee and a soul. I will light a candle tonight and read with a hot cup of tea…and maybe even journal again. I will be thankful, stop, reflect and create a NEW ritual for myself.
    Thank you!

    Me Ra,
This post so spoke to my soul today. I have been running on empty for a while now and today I started to feel like I couldn’t go one more minute. I’ve been forgetting to inhale and your post reminded me that I really do need to take time for me. From the bottom of my heart, Thank You for this reminder.

Things that I love to do for me include:
    *Photography
*Paper Art (Creating cards & scrapbook pages)
    *Getting a massage
*Sitting by the ocean (doesn’t happen often..I live about 16+ hours from the ocean, but when I get there I don’t leave her side until its time to come back home–so, yes, water speaks lots of healing to me)
    *Reading

Wishing you and yours a very happy holiday.

This post was so awesome to hear that it gave me the push to finally leave a comment on your blog! There is a photographer in Oregon whose site I came across last year, who lets her clients know that she doesn’t book ANYTHING in December. I thought that would help me “breathe in”. It has (even though I weakened and booked a few!) I also burn candles at my desk that smell like cookies, and turn on mellow music. Those two things make being at the desk SO much more pleasant…

  13. Me Ra says:

wow, Marianne! I’m freaking out over your new site! You are blazing girl! Great, great job! You should be so proud!

And Julie, I loved your “Mystery Stew” section on your website. What a great category name!

Jen, I’m so sorry. You sound both tired and strong. I’m saying a prayer for your right now.

Thanks for all the comments friends. I’m so glad this post spoke to you. It’s amazing how many of us are struggling for the same things. Thanks for being my encouragement today.

What a wonderful MONDAY message! I really needed this little reminder today and apparently you touched others as well. Once again you have shown what a giving person you really are. Thank you. btw-loved that shot of the kids in the backseat. How we can all relate to that one!
Now, I have a friendly warning for you. The cheerios and fruity vitamins may not work when your little guys are 7 & 8 years old. I had to promise chocolate fondue to my little buddies to get through this year’s Christmas card shoot. It was messy. It was tasty. It was well worth it! This is about my favorite year so far.
Just thought I’d let you know what you were in for down the road. 🙂

    Me Ra,

What a wonderful post. We just got back from a Carribean cruise and it was a much-needed break from all the hustle and bustle. While I was gone, I resolved to take little breaks so that it doesn’t all build up like it had before we went on the cruise. It’s funny–when you take breaks and even fail to get things done, life still goes on. We were worried about what taking 10 days off would do to our business, but it was almost like everything stood still and all of our clients and prospective clients were very understanding and respectful of our vacation. It was wonderful!

Thank you for being so honest in all your posts–I hope that when you encourage others you are also encouraged yourself.

    See you soon!

    Airika
