Family Photography: 14 Ways to Capture Dad’s Story

Me Ra Koh

Reflection of Dad

Silhouette photos are a wonderful way to capture dad’s story in pictures.  There is a timeless feel to silhouettes that slow us down, almost inviting us to exhale.  I loved having Blaze (with his fly away hair) almost be Brian’s reflection in this portrait.  And the best part, if the kids are feeling tired, fussy or uncooperative, you’d never know!  You can take silhouettes at sunrise or sunset.

To capture a great silhouette, turn your flash off and set your camera to Aperture Priority mode.  Pick a high f-stop, like f/16, since you’ll be shooting into direct light.  Take a few test shots.  If dad and the kids aren’t dark enough, go even higher in your f-stop.

Using a smartphone or point-and-shoot?  Easy!  Just tap the sky to make your subjects dark.  DONE!  For a more detailed, step-by-step photo recipe on silhouettes, check out my third book in the series Your Family in Pictures. (also on the Top 10 Bestseller List with 77 5 Star Reviews)
