Family Photography: 14 Ways to Capture Dad’s Story

Me Ra Koh

Play with Me, Dad!

Do you ever hear the kids say “Play with me!  Play with me!  Play with me dad!”  Depending on your kid’s age, you may hear it from the moment he walks in the door until the lights go out for bedtime.  The story of a playful dad could be endless things; dad playing trains or Legos, building a blanket fort, or teaching the kids to fish.  Or it could be snuggle, story time in bed.  While filming our family travel show in Thailand’s jungle, we met a sweet family.  The dad told me that he and his son, Boon, play every morning under the mosquito net together.  I had to capture this dad’s story!  (Boon’s favorite movie was also “Frozen” because with growing up in a jungle, he had never imagined any thing like snow before!  Darling, right?!)

Mosquito nets are just like sheer white curtains in how they do a beautiful job at diffusing window light.  When I first started taking portraits, I would even bring a sheer, white curtain panel with me if the window light was to strong at my client’s home.  If you’ve got bright window light, try this fun exercise with sheer curtain panels.  You’ll be surprised at how it changes the whole look, feel, mood of the moment.
