7 Tricks for Engaging Toddlers in Photos

Whisper Their Name

Right after I took the previous photo from behind, I came over to the bench and whispered her name.  All I needed was a small glance.  Toddlers love it when I’m playful and high energy, but I don’t want all the photos to have a loud feeling.  I also want the contemplative, quiet moments too.

Mom was already sitting close by to keep an eye on things.  She is set up to be a beautiful, loving background.  I asked her to lean out just a hair, smile softly and look at Lila.  You can see how I’m filling the far third with mom and the opposite third with Lila.  Quick photo composition that accentuates the moment.  For those of you who love camera settings: Aperture was a f/3.2 so mom would be softened in the background (which often enhances their emotion), Shutter Speed was 1/250th of a sec, and ISO was 250.  Location was Central Park, NYC.  To gain confidence in your camera settings so you aren’t just capturing “Happy Accidents” but consistently great photos, check out our 2-Day Confidence Workshop.  Brian and I have been doing this photography workshop for women (sorry guys) for almost TEN years, selling them out nationwide.
