First Year: Veggie Time For Baby

Jennifer Tacbas

Jen here a First Year post about Veggies and Baby!

Who’s excited to try today’s new vegetable?  LOGAN!

At her four-month checkup, Logan’s physician gave her the thumbs up to begin eating pureed vegetables.  I am so excited about it – it is so fun to introduce Logan to new things!  I love when she takes in that first spoonful of a vegetable she’s never had.  She rolls the food around in her mouth and gets this inquisitive look on her face as if she’s trying to name that vegetable.  So far, the first swallow of every new food has been followed by a big gummy grin.  Hooray for a healthy little eater!

Sweet potatoes, green beans, sweet peas, butternut squash…Logan’s given them all her smile of approval.  And today, she’s going to try her last new veggie for the month of May – mixed carrots!  I sat her in her favorite chair, put on a bib, and it was time to begin the taste test!

I squirted a little organic carrot puree onto the spoon and looked up at Logan, who already had her mouth open!  HA!  No airplane sound effects necessary with the feeding of this first spoonful of carrots!  Logan was quick to approve this new veggie – her face lit up, and she gave me the sweetest orange grin you ever did see.

The first several spoonfuls were actually quite tidy – she kept most of the carrots in her mouth – but that didn’t last for long.  Logan decided that mealtime should be accompanied by some music, which she was happy to provide.  She began sing-talking in a variety of tones, and when she hit her newly acquired soprano notes, carrots shot out of her mouth!  I got her cleaned up and fed her another spoonful of carrots…just in time for a few sneezes!  Carrots were now sprayed all over her, the table and me!  I just looked at her in disbelief.  There was a quiet pause where we stared at each other for a moment, and then Logan giggled.  I’m so glad she thought this was entertaining!  I laughed, too.  I got us cleaned up again, and soon after, my little teething baby decided it was time to eat some fingers!  Oh, how our mealtime had evolved into an orange mess!

I love feeding Logan organic vegetables – it makes me happy to know that I am giving my little girl the best quality foods.  While I am currently buying ready-made organic veggie purees, I am looking forward to pureeing my own organic veggies soon!

Introducing Logan to vegetables has actually inspired my husband and I to make healthier food choices.  We agree that one of the best gifts we can give Logan is two healthy parents.  By choosing to eat healthier, we will also be setting good examples for Logan as she grows up.  As far as I’m concerned, as long as she makes healthy choices, she can make all the mess she wants.

Do you have any funny baby’s first food stories about your little one…or perhaps about yourself?  I’d love for you to share them in the comments section below.  My mom said my baby book reveals that 34 years ago, my pediatrician had me eating veggies, fruits and strained meats by the time I was only several weeks old!  My, how times have changed!

Meet me here next Monday for a special post written for one of Logan’s favorite people in the whole wide world!  You’ll  have to come back next week to find out who it is!

First Year Cheers!

Jen
