Photograph Christmas Lights: Simple Photo Tutorials

Turn Off Your Auto Flash

The first photo was our AFTER photo, so let’s look at the BEFORE one.  This is what you don’t want.  Genuine smiles but HORRIBLE lighting! If your camera fires the flash, this is what your photo will look like.  Yikes!!!  YUCK!!!  LOL!  See how the flash fired so much light on our faces that we lost the ambient, magical lighting of the Christmas tree lights.  That pop-up flash is never your friend.  It’s much better to turn off the flash and raise your ISO for more light when you photograph Christmas lights.  Depending on your camera body model, the higher ISO may give you a little grain.  But at least you’ll capture the ambient lighting versus looking like your child is walking out of a bat cave. 🙂
