Summer is a GREAT time to pull out your camera and try some new Photo Tips and Photo Exercises, how about putting your hand to Shooting Silhouettes!ย But be prepared to get comfortable with dark images rather than bright ones.
If you love taking photos, you may have been told at some point to look for the best light.ย Look through magazines and see if you can identify the light source in every photo.ย As your walking to the park, be aware of where the sun is and how the sunโs position affects your photos.ย Where would the sun land on your kidsโ faces?ย How would you adjust yourself or them?ย But with all these light focused questions there is a problem.ย We negate the beauty in the lack of light.
Photography is always teaching me something.ย This year, Iโve been processing my own beliefs and barriers with the issue of light.ย Iโve found myself going inward and facing the fact that Iโm not comfortable in the dark.ย Brian and I are in the midst of a couple big life changes right now, and I feel like Iโm groping in the darkโtrying to find my way.ย Itโs exhausting at times.ย I just want to see light, and if I get a little, I want more.
But darkness has an amazing role too.ย The darkness isnโt just dark:ย it defines where the light exists.ย Darkness helps us see how bright the light is.ย As I mull these thoughts over in my heart and head, Iโve been trying to give myself freedom to shoot in the dark.

I think I’d like to choose the background of a dark tunnel in the bowels of Angkor Wat’s temples ๐ I’ll settle for something closer to home for now though, so I can be practiced up when I get the opportunity for some exotic place (looks like maybe Africa next year).
This post made me think of a quote I love by Ruth Renkel…
“Never fear shadows. They simply mean there’s a light shining somewhere nearby.” Praying for a blessed day for you today!
