Looking for a Community of Photographers?

Me Ra Koh

Every month we have a special meeting for photographers. If you’re in the neighborhood, join us!

People have come from Idaho, Oregon and of course, Washington. But if your visiting from out of town and want to jump in on the fun, we’d love to have you!

What do we do?

We start with wine and appetizers, everyone brings a little something. Then we have a focused topic for the night. Sometimes the topic has to do with growing your business, marketing, or shooting techniques, or the nuts and bolts to your business.

Right now I have a series of people coming who help photographers with the “business” side of their business. Last month our wonderful banker, Dani Collins from Columbia Bank, came and talked to us about becoming bankable, when to consider commercial financing, tax benefits and so forth.

This month our meeting is on Wednesday, April 23rd (two days before our Sonoma Workshop starts! Yeah!). It starts at 6:30pm.

For this month, I’ve asked our lawyer, Jennifer Huddleston Wing, to come and talk about the differences between having an LLC, Corporations and being a Sole Proprietor. Airika also had a great idea of asking Jennifer to discuss the Top Ten Pitfalls of a Small Business. If you are in need of lawyer type input, I got Jennifer to join Facebook. πŸ™‚ You can find her as Jennifer Huddleston Wing or just go to my page Me Ra Koh and you’ll see her as a friend there too. But seriously, I’ve known her for years–she’s amazing. For those of you who have bought and loved our 101 Kits, particularly the Wedding, Portrait and Associate Kits, Jennifer has been the legal mastermind behind all those contracts. She’s a contract queen!

If you are a veteran in the industry or considering starting a business, you are totally welcome. The appetizer/wine part is 30 minutes or so, the formal part of the meeting lasts about 1 hr. This officially ends our group around 9pm. Then we eventually have to kick people out at 1am.

We love this night and everyone who comes! Sometimes there are 12 of us, sometimes there are 40 of us! Each year we also do a Martini Garden Party every summer and a Christmas Party.

But I’m also super excited to have new leaders for the group. Brian and I starting leading it a couple of years ago, but our schedule has become to crazy to do the job justice. We are still going to be hosting, but Gerald and Airika Pope have volunteered to take over the leadership side of things, and they are so cool! I can’t wait to see how their leadership will take this group to another level!

This is Airika (the one sticking her tongue out). As you can see, she’s very unapproachable. πŸ™‚

If your interested on info and details to the meetings, shoot Airika an email and she’ll hook you up! (airika@geraldpope.com)

And most of all, be encouraged to find a community of photographers that are safe and encouraging. If you are feeling looked down upon by other photographers, get out of that situation and find a new group where people love you, cheer you on, and believe in you. Sometimes it doesn’t feel like it, but there are more of these types of wonderful photographers than the Negative Nellie’s. πŸ™‚ Just got to hang in there and find them.

PUG meetings = Awesome! Can’t wait to hear what jennifer will share!

Photographers not in this area, don’t be afraid to contact photographers in your area via their blog or email and plan get togethers like the pug meetings or even lunch or drinks. Networking is really important and its great to have a group of people that share your passion!

  2. Denise says:

how fun! I hope a lot of photographers in your area read this post – it seems like it would totally help them out!

Beautiful living room by the way πŸ˜‰

  3. Michelle says:

Do you have to be a “professional” with an established business to join a PUG group?

  4. Jen Sulak says:

way fun! …on a similar note…my hubby and i are talking about co-leading a life team together at our church…and get this…itz a PHOTOGRAPHY team! hahahahaha!!!
i’m so excited…but it prolly won’t happen for a few months still, but itz goign to rock.

  5. Airika Pope says:

Hey guys! We have so much fun at our PUG–you should definitely join us! Michelle, you do not have to have your photo biz in full swing, but it does help to have a goal of starting a photo business someday…we like to “talk shop,” so you might get a little bored if you have zero interest in starting up a business of your own. πŸ™‚ Why don’t you just come this month and see if it fits what you’re looking for? It’ be great to have you! See you all soon!

  6. Amy P. says:

Oh wow, these meetings sound like a blast and full of great information & advice. I am in the same boat as Michelle though; I donÒ€ℒt have a business yet, I have just been doing some research and thinking A LOT about it. If my schedule permits, maybe I could join everyone?? But I would be SO nervous; I’ve never really put myself out there before. We’ll see… πŸ˜€

  7. Julie Watts says:

30 minutes ago I was JUST on the phone with a gal in the beginning stages of her photography business, and I told her she has to go see your blog and consider coming to the PUG meetings. I’m so excited for her to see that you posted this TODAY!

And I too, encourage anybody out their scared of being the “beginner” in the group to tell the fear to “take a hike” and come JUST ONCE!! It’s sooo less scary than you think. πŸ™‚

  8. Lauren says:

I wish I could go to your PUG meeting! I’ve been looking for local photography meetings in my area and the closest ones are 2.5 hours away. πŸ™

I keep thinking, Me Ra, that you should have a forum where we (your friends and fans) can interact. You’ve already gathered a great community of photographers here that follow your blog. We can support one another in our photography and in other areas of our lives – such as being moms or dads or starting a business, etc. We can share our stories, our families, our photographs. I just think that would be so great to meet the others who frequent your blog. I tend to follow the links the ladies are posting with their comments and I check up on their blogs and pictures, and sometimes I read other comments and think, “I so relate to that! I would love to chat with this woman.” I just don’t want to take over your blog comments. πŸ˜‰

Anyway, just a thought! Have a great time at your PUG meeting. It sounds like so much fun!

(PS: I have forum moderation experience if this idea takes off. I know you & Brian don’t have time to moderate a forum in addition to all the other wonderful things you do!)

    ♥ your friend Lauren

  9. Sue Christianson says:

someday I am going to join your community! Seriously I think my goal in life right now is to make it to a Me Ra Koh photography workshop!!! πŸ™‚

  10. Denise says:

I’m with Lauren – a simple fourm for all the Me Ra mom’s would be cool – over the last year, I’ve come to recognize regular commenters on this blog and think it would be fun to get to know them more and offer feedback and advice to one another. I’ve participated in other fourms out there and it seems like everyone is so snobby or unfriendly… one of the reasons I love this blog so much is that the people on here ARE so friendly, willing to learn and willing to help – good idea, Lauren!

  11. Carol Swales says:

This sounds like a ton of fun, how exciting that Gerald and Airika will be leading now!

And I have to say I agree with Denise and Lauren about the forum. Doesn’t Me Ra Mom’s have a great ring to it? πŸ™‚

  12. Susanne says:

    I wish I could go πŸ™

I live much too far away…

  13. Me Ra says:

Wow, your ideas are being taken to heart ladies! Thanks for sharing your input and especially your thoughts on how to further this wonderful community and keep us growing together. I’m going to sit on all your thoughts, mull it over, talk about how to make it happen with Brian and keep you all updated.

Funny thing is that this morning I was coming home from the gym at 7am and checked my email on my phone, and one of my first emails was from a sweetheart of a lady asking Brian and I to consider starting a forum for all of you. Then to read your comments today…hmmmm… πŸ™‚

  14. susanne says:

Oh yeah! I will so join your community forum if you open one. I joined Carey’s and I love it! It was the best investment and I learn so much from others! And everyone is so nice and willing to help out!

  15. Lauren says:

I was thinking the “Refuse to Say Cheese” forum. Marketing, marketing, marketing. LOL!!! πŸ˜‰

  16. Hey there! If you decide to start a forum, proboards are easy to set up. http://www.proboards.com/index.html. πŸ™‚ I haven’t been to a PUG before but think I might be going to the next one!

  17. wonderful , very resourceful. I like it in deed. I come acoss your site by yahoo search engine. I would read your site oftenly and share it to my classmates. Please keep it fresh. Keep on the good work. – A sweet girl
