Top Eleven Highlights to WPPI 2009!

Me Ra Koh

The TOP ELEVEN Highlights to WPPI 2009!

1. Reunion Time!

We’ve gone to WPPI for the last three years, and every year it feels like a bigger and better reunion with friends you only see once a year. My dear friend, Sara France, and the awesome Robert Evans, hosted the best Photography Mentor/GOBee Bag party yet! It was Sunday night, and the BEST way to kick of the whole tradeshow week! Thanks you two for all the hard work that goes into throwing such a great party! And thanks for making it open to so many people. The heart of you two is always wanting to invite people in, and it’s a very cool thing! Check out Robert’s Photography Mentor site and Sara’s NEW, AWESOME blog!

2. Master Class Blast!

Our Master Class on Photo Coaching was a BLAST! Bronson took a ton of images that I haven’t even had a chance to look at, but I’ll post some up soon. We had a full class, and the energy in the room was awesome! Thanks to every one who signed up for our Master Class. It was a honor to spend those hours with you! So many of you approached us over the next two days and thanked us for the class. Your feedback meant the world! Thank you!! I also have to do a special SHOUT OUT to Roxie at Pixel 2 Canvas! She and Curt made these AMAZING canvases of our work and a HUGE, beautiful banner outside our door.

The whole thing looked amazing! Roxie, send me our photo so I can post it up here! Thank you to Pixel 2 Canvas from the bottom of our heart! (And thanks to the lovely ladies who helped in the background! You three were dolls!)

3. Stealing the Mic!

Tuesday afternoon, Brian and I did a talk at the Pictage booth with Denis Reggie.

For those of you who don’t know, Denis Reggie has been a hero to us since we first took his workshop in the early days (amazing workshop for wedding photographers). To be invited to speak with Denis was a wonderful honor. (but I soon realized that I had to GRAB the microphone from the man to get a word in edge wise! :)) Thanks to Mike in Hawaii from Mango Tree Photography for capturing this great image!

4. Heartfelt Dinner

Later that night we had a special dinner with a handful of Pictage leaders. Half way through the dinner, I convinced Mike Colon to switch places with me at the table so I could get to know Joe Buissink better. Joe’s work astounds me and Brian. His images leave us breathless. But his passion for photography is what moves me the most. I lucked out b/c Mike switched places, and I had the most wonderful, heartfelt conversation with Joe. We talked about all the things that are closest to my heart when it comes to being an artist; how do we build more confidence, how does our pain in life affect our art, and a few other wonderful conversations that I’ll share at our Discovery Workshop. Joe, thank you for sharing your heart. My time with you was a definite, unexpected highlight to our week!

5. Brian doing the River Dance!

Pictage hosted a HUGE party at Studio 54 (or 59?) late Tuesday night. I pretty much walked in and in 15 minutes had to turn around and walk out. It was the craziest experience b/c I felt so dizzy inside the club (and I wasn’t drinking :)). I think my Audio Deficit Disorder played into it b/c my equilibrium was thrown completely off that we had to head out. The moment we walked out the door, and the music was gone, I had my sense of balance back. So Me Ra learned something new. She can’t hang out in loud, and I mean SUPER loud, dance clubs. ๐Ÿ™‚ Since the night was young, Brian and I joined up with Airika and Gerald Pope and Katie and Chris Torres and found ourselves at the Nine Fine Irishmen pub where they had a Irish band performing. Brian, being an expert River Dancer (as many of you have come to realize, Brian is an expert on just about every thing), did his river dance with Chris! That was a definite HIGHLIGHT for me. ๐Ÿ˜‰

6. Jeramy and Sharon Showed UP!

Right before WPPI, Jeramy (our token male commenter :)), emailed us and said he and Sharon were coming to WPPI for the first day! Brian and I were so excited to see them! But we didn’t get done with our speaking sessions and appointments until almost 9:30pm. When we got up to our room that night, we called Jeramy and Sharon. They had changed into their PJ’s and opened a bottle of wine. We asked them if they were up to meeting us for dessert, and so awesome, they totally ditched the bottle of wine and had dessert with us! I laughed so hard that night I almost wet my pants! Thanks you two for coming out! We are so glad we got some time with you both!

7. Workshop Ladies Going for It!

Brian and I also ran into a handful of ladies from our San Diego workshop! These beautiful ladies all came to WPPI together and were having a BLAST! Some of them showed me their photography since they did our workshop, and I was speechless. Totally speechless! I’m so proud of you ladies! And way to go! WPPI is such a great thing for your business! I can’t wait to hear stories of how the week impacted all of YOU!

8. Hearing the NEW news!

We spent a few hours with the awesome founders behind Shoot Dot Edit, the BEST post process company ever! And ladies (and gents!), I’m excited to say that I got the newest scoop that you are going to LOVE! Shoot Dot Edit is now accepting a la carte orders! This means you don’t have to upload a wedding to have them color process your images! You can send them a 100 images from a Portrait Shoot, have them all color balanced, and only pay around $22! It’s INSANE!!! How can you beat that price! And I’m telling you, these guys care about your images as much as you do! We are proof of it! Yeah for the new A La Carte MENU!!! Check it out portrait lad
ies!

9. All Frozen Pea Jokes

…from my twitter and facebook status! Oh boy, Brian has such a great attitude! ๐Ÿ™‚

10. Family!

We literally ended our time with seeing family! And that was the BEST way to end a great week! Brian’s sister, brother in law, and our niece live in Vegas b/c they are key players to the creative choreography in Le Reve, the Cirque Du Soleil show at the Wynn. Before we headed to the airport yesterday, we got to spend some precious hours with them. Not enough time, not enough. But it was such a wonderful, rich way to end our time! love you guys!

11. Coming Home Means…

We have two days and then we leave for TWO MONTHS to Thailand! Can you believe it?!! We leave with the kids on Saturday to start our adventure of Jungle School in Thailand! Ooooh, we are going to have fun on this blog over the next several weeks!

Honest to goodness, I think this was the best WPPI we’ve ever been too! Every year it gets better and better! Next year, you must be there! Big thanks to Bill, Skip, Shawna and all the those behind the scenes!!

p.s. I didn’t have as much time to follow your comments on the last couple posts. But I’m glad you all had fun with Brian’s “snip-snip” post. That was the talk of the show! ๐Ÿ™‚ And we’re all super excited about how the tuition and new Focus Groups meets your needs even more for the Discovery Workshop! Thanks for all the blog comments!

  1. My dear MeRa and Brian of the frozen peas *snerk* It was such a pleasure printing your work AGAIN – I swear the printers purr when they know YOUR work is coming…and listening to you two talk and bust each other up is SO refreshing. Your faith and friendship means the world to me. Be safe in Thailand and I’ll see you soon! Much love, Roxanne and Curt – Pixel2Canvas

  2. whew! what a whirlwind! definitely hope to be at WPPI next year, sounds like a great time…

  3. Erin Hughes says:

MeRa, I just LOVE that picture of all of us! I can’t tell you how great is was to run into you and Brian during the convention.
Since the San Diego workshop last year, my whole life has changed (and I’m not speaking in terms of my career).

Unfortunately, there were several girls from the SD workshop that couldn’t make it to WPPI this year and we missed you all so much!

As I drove back home from Vegas on Tuesday afternoon, I had the opportunity to reflect on several things. I am absolutely amazed at how one little moment in my life has impacted me the way it has. The SD workshop has got to be one of the most amazing 2 days I’ve ever experienced.
Yes, I learned so much from the topics covered that weekend, but I also learned about FRIENDSHIP.
I’ve now been blessed with the gift of having the most WONDERFUL women I can call my closest friends. It doesn’t matter how far away we all live from one another, I love the fact that we continue to remain in each others lives. We shared a classroom for 2 days and most importantly, we shared our hearts.
This is a group of women that are such caring and giving souls and I can’t thank you enough for not only sharing your knowledge and experience in photography with me, but also being a living example of what a true friend should be.

    Love you all,
    Erin Hughes

  4. Sharon says:

Jeramy is going to be so hard to live with now….

WPPI was so fun and next year we will be there for more then a day! For sure! It was so fun, but so overwhelming too! I felt like such a little fish in a big pond.

Meeting up with you was awesome! Jeramy and Brian are too much, then you throw in Chris… Man! I could see that go down hill fast! No, wait…. It did. =) HA! We had a blast! I am so glad we went out with you guys! Who goes to bed at 9:30 when you are in Vegas!

Thanks for hooking up with us! You and Brian are the best and we love you BIG!

I am so excited to hear all about your jungle school adventures! You are in our prayers!

  5. abbey says:

OH my gosh, Brian cracks me up!!
No snip snip was holding him back from “riverdance”!! ha ha!
    Hilarious!!

  6. jeramy says:

i just finished my vegas wrap up blog post. you’re in mine too! ahhh!!!! ๐Ÿ™‚ seriously, we had a blast. you two are the best. i’ll be praying for safety and super fun and adventure for you all in thailand. excited to hear all about it in may. take care!

  7. shawnreeder says:

It was so good to see you and Brian Mera. WPPI is so amazing, and I think the best part is those time when we just run into someone in the hallway and end up having amazing conversation. I’m so stoked for you 2 and your trip to Thailand!! Have an incredible trip, and I look forward to being in touch.

  8. Lauren says:

WPPI sounds like so much fun! I’ll have to start shooting weddings so that I’ll have a good excuse for going next year. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I hope there are lots of Thailand blog posts, because I don’t think many of us will make it through 2 months without Me Ra updates!

  9. Jen May says:

Definitely looks like you all had a great time! ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. Terra Dawn says:

I am just starting my business and came in on the WPPI game a little too late…but I am already counting the days down until next year!!!

This post just gets me even more excited!!!

  11. Tessa says:

I am SO glad we ran into you and Brian at WPPI. You both are the reason that these amazing women are now in my life. I am a better photographer because of you, Brian, Carey and all of the ladies I met last May. I never thought that by attending a two day workshop I’d come home with 20 new, warm, caring wonderful friends!!!!!!!!!!!

Have a great time in Thailand and I hope to see you both again soon.

  12. Kate says:

I was so bummed I could not go to WPPI this year, but enough on my SD Workshop gals went and we are all going to get together to share. I already marked my calendar for next year…. I will have to join Tessa and Erin (love you guys) and say that the 2-3 days we shared in May of 2008 have changed my life in so many ways. You, Brian, Carey and all my wonderful gals from “SD Workshop 08” are helping my dream come true everyday.
    Thank you!!
Much love and see you in Marin!!

  13. jared says:

Sooo good to see you again! Thanks, as always, for your support and good thoughts. I’ll see you soon I’m sure – blessings to you and Brian!

    – Jared

  14. That was funny when you finally got the mic back from Dennis! I loved how you and Brian told about how you run your business… it was refreshing!

The pictures that Roxanne brought were amazing. I also don’t know how all the classes you teach end up with more people than there are chairs for – no matter where in the world you go?!!

I can’t wait to see what your ‘Jungle School’ will look like!

  15. Katie Torres says:

    No. 5….wow…we are honored. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  16. Jen says:

Can I just tell you how BUMMED I was not to be able to make it to WPPI this year….that’s all i was thinking about as i was recoving from jet lag. I’m jealous…in so many ways…the networking, the friendships, the dancing, the motivation, the sharing of experiences and work, and being able to talk about it for years to come. I missed out!
I hope to see you on Wednesday night (hopefully you guys can make it). If not, I wish you all the best while you’re away in Thailand. I love that place and already long to go back…hence my reason for jet lag. ๐Ÿ˜‰ (no complaints there).
I miss you all…I really do!
    Jen

  17. Annie says:

MeRa and Brian it was AWESOME to a)Hang out with you guys at the GoBee party and b)To be able to watch your Masterclass (amazing as always!!) and to be able to rave about you and what you have taught me personally while selling your products. (thanx a TON for the swag too). I hope I have many more opportunities to spend time with you in the future. Love, Annie

  18. Sara France says:

Me Ra, you are the best and you know I love you! Those are the greatest highlights! You were one of the biggest highlights of my trip! Love you and Brian so much!

    Sara

  19. Emily says:

Hi MeRa!! I can’t believe you blogged about us and posted our picture!! It was wonderful running into you and Brian at WPPI! I want to 2nd everything Erin said! I truely feel blessed that you are a part of my life. Whether it is through the inspiration you give as I Blog stock you, the “realness” you share on your website, the unbelievable experience of attending one of your workshops or just your beautiful smile and your willingness to take the time to stop and chat with us girls on your way to your hotel room!! You have definitely given me more than you know. Thank you for sharing so much of yourself with all of us. Because of you I have made some REAL friends through the workshop. I don’t know how it is possible to meet so many beautiful women in just a few days (Including You…and Brian except he’s not a woman but still beautiful or maybe he’d prefer wonderful?) I mean I just shared WPPI with 4 four of the women from the workshop and they are all beautiful and perfect in their own way. I never would have met them if it wasn’t for you! You are very special and I just love everything about you! So Thank You! Have fun in “Jungle School” I will keep you and your family in my prayers! Good Bless you guys!! -Hugs

  20. Susanne says:

Have a wonderful time on your vacation and I will see you guys soon ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Hugs!!

  21. Susanne says:

    BTW MeRa,

That night that we took that picture we found out my hubby and Emily and HER hubby went and graduated from the same school same year and that when we were each dating our hubbies in college we were probably sitting next to each other at the bleachers at their soccer games! LOL!!

  22. denise karis says:
