We are overwhelmed by the response we got for the Running on Empty contest. You are all such amazing, strong women. Your stories inspire me and so many others–you have no idea.
The contest is officially closed. We hope to have the three winners posted by this weekend. Stay tuned!
We are also back home–to our Thai home that is. Where the sea is shades of green and the days are long and lazy.
Brian and I had considered ending this last part of our trip by taking the kids to see the ruins of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. But after asking around we decided to wait till the kids are a little older. We’re going to spend our last bit of time at our Thai home among this wonderful community and magical place. It’s good to be home. Thought I’d share one of my favorite photos of Pascaline with you.
For all my Photo Recipe lovers…I waded into the water to get this shot of Pascaline on the rope swing. I shot the image with my AWESOME Sony DSLR-A900 and a favorite lens, the 24-70mm/2.8. I set the aperture to 2.8. My ISO was super low, 100, because of how bright the sun was on the beach. An ISO of 100 is often perfect for shooting images on the beach. My shutter speed was super fast because of how bright the sun is. It was 6400! I metered on Pascaline’s face to find my Shutter Speed and get a bit of silhouette effect going. Let me know in the comments of today’s post if you have any questions about the settings or gear!

Great shot. How did she get up there?
Incredible! It’s been such a joy to follow along.
Beautiful picture – enjoy being “home”!
I love that picture!! The flare and the water color – thanks for sharing!
Love the shot. Question – what kind of post editing did you do to the photo (vignetting? anything else)?
Thanks,
Eric
What a beautiful photo!
Oh, I really love this shot.
Beautiful! I have a question: With a wide aperture like 2.8, why isn’t the background more blurred? Do you need a wider aperture, like 1.4, to get more blur?
Alejandra, I had the same question! And Me Ra, if our shutter speed only goes to 4000, would you just increase the aperture setting so that your shot wasn’t over exposed?
That photo is amazing!!!! My only question is: why keep the f-stop so low? Everything from foreground to background is absolutely lovely – was there a reason you kept it at 2.8? I do love how the fast shutter speed froze the water like that – it looks beautiful!!
WOW! That photo has such SPIRIT! The blues and greens really add to it as well. Definitely would love to know more about the questions asked above but I’m also wondering if you had something to protect your camera in this shot? Like a watercase or something of that nature. Or were you just extra super careful 😉
Love this shot! I did have one question: Has the Simple Gifts contest winner been announced? I know the contest ended in Jan. and I hadn’t seen anything. Maybe I missed it. I am enjoying the glimpse into your life with your family as you live in beautiful Thailand! Thanks for sharing with the world.
great shot! enjoy the rest of the trip.
I have ALWAYS wanted to climb the cliffs right out of the boat! that is sooo cool! (ps ~ sorry i sent that late! i thought the contest ended at 6 pm not am ~ and appearantly so dod my hubby!)
Are you kidding me?! This picture is AMAZING!!! The color and the sun are so beautiful. It looks so much like Indiana! 🙂
That picture is amazing!! Not only will your two beautiful children have great memories of Thailand, they will also have amazing pictures as well. Thank you for giving us the camera settings. I did have a question like some of the other women, with an f-stop of 2.8 why isn’t the background more blurred?
I love the blue sky and water, just amazing!
That is a stunning image! I think it’s fantastic the memories and adventures you and your family are collecting of such a beautiful country. Thanks for the photo tips. Wish I had you along for advice when I try to shoot photos at the horse-races at Longchamp this afternoon!
I love love love this shot!!! Makes me so happy!!! What an adventure and your family just seems to be eating it all up and taking it all in. I admire you sooo much for that! Wow….
I am with Eric, I would also love to know what you did post processing… just a little vignetting? I love it. I think it is more about the spirit and the adventure of the photo. You just really capture a moment!!!
I am on the verge of buying a 24-70 mm lens. I am just starting my own photography business and don’t know if I need to splurge for canon’s L series. VERY expensive! But I also don’t want to buy cheap glass and be unsatisfied with the results. Any of your wisdom would be greatly appreciated! Thanks MeRa!
WOW! Amazing photo!
Wow! absolutely perfect! Gorgeous image!
Peace….I get such a peace and carefreeness from this picture. Lovely!
I agree that this picture is killer! By metering off her face, what exactly do you mean? It seems that you are pretty far away from her so you couldn’t just walk up there and meter. So did you set your exposure by the rocks and then move over? Or is there some trick I don’t know yet?
You’re fabulous as always!
-Amy
when you say you meter – does it mean you turn it to automatic and get the reading on the shutter speed with the apeture at 2.8 then turn it to manual and adjust the camera to manual or do you just use “light meter” inside the camera?
