Done for the Day!

Me Ra Koh

With waking up at 6:30am from all the jungle noises and then having to walk everywhere because there are no roads or cars, this little guy has fallen asleep around 7pm every night while I’m reading out loud. At home, Blaze is often the one whispering to his sissy in the top bunk or getting up to go potty four or five times. But here, he’s been the first one out every night. 🙂

For those of you who love photo recipes, here’s how I took the shot!

I turned my ISO up to 800 b/c of how dark it was.

I kept my Aperture super low to help add more light. It was all the way down to a 1.7 fstop.

I used a lens that had more of a wide angle to get his full body in the shot and still be close to his body.

The Shutter Speed was 1/60th of a second. It was determined by metering the light on Blaze’s face. I wanted his face and body to be lit, but I wanted the night sky behind him to be black–for more drama. So I used my internal meter and adjusted my Shutter Speed until the light on his face was between a 0 to 1 on the Exposure Compensation Scale (yuck, I hate how techy that word sounds!). If I could make my own camera, the Exposure Compensation Scale in your camera would read “To Dark!” or “To Bright!”. That’s all it’s really telling us to begin with. Right former workshop attendees!

To learn more about metering without using big, techy, confusing words, check out our DVD, Beyond the Green Box ! If you live out of country, you can get the download version here!

And thanks for ALL your comments on our Thailand Adventure blog posts! The Internet is so slow here that it’s hard to comment myself, but all of us LOVE reading your feedback as we post! Keep your comments coming, and I’ll keep the posts coming! 🙂

xoxoxo,
Me Ra

What a great adventure you are all having, I love how tuckered out Blaze is. I imagine that’s how I would feel too!!

I love these posts and I’m so glad you are able to keep us updated on your trip. 🙂

  2. Pamela S. says:

Thank you, thank you! Tomorrow night, can you do different metering on the sleeping Blaze? Have fun on today’s adventures! Blessings.

  3. How amazing!!! That picture will be cherished for years to come!!! I can imagine that he is just exhausted from taking in everything that he can with every single step he takes. Not wanting to miss a single monkey’s sway from branch to branch, or wanting to protect his food…hahaha

What an INCREDIBLE experience you & your family are sharing!!! I am sure this trip will be cherished for the rest of your lives. Thank you so much for sharing your journey with all of us.

Much Love, Many Blessings, & TONS of Laughs,

    😉 Shannon

    Beautiful on every level! xoxo

  5. Eric says:

Wonderful posts. Love them! One more question on your technical data on the Blaze photo…how do you get the right WB? Do fix this in post in most cases? Or the incandescent setting (or even auto) correct for this pretty well?

  6. lora says:

aww, you’re very own jungle boy! “Blazey the jungle boy” (to the tune of Bindi the jungle girl, I love that show!)

  7. lora says:

    I mean, YOUR very own ……..I hate typo’s ! 🙂

  8. Sue Christianson says:

He looks so big laying there! I am so intrigued with adventures in Thailand. I look every day for an update to see what you guys are doing next. Yeah, I know I need to get a life, but somehow reading about your adventures in Thailand are way more fun than working at my desk at the church right now! Have an awesome day or night or whatever time it is there when you read this.
    Love,
    Sue

Absolutely beautiful shot!! I love dramatic lighting 🙂

  13. Laura says:

Lovely shot – why is there no noise at ISO 800? Must be a very good camera, eh?

  14. denise karis says:

That really is a stunning photo – thanks so much for the recipe! It totally blows any other ‘sleeping little boy’ shots Ive seen right out of the water – beautiful!!!

  15. stunning shot. just completely stunning

  16. Sara France says:

I am crying I want to be there so bad. I am still working on it and I have not given up. Keep praying.

  17. Michelle says:

    That is an amazing image!

  18. Me Ra Koh says:

Yeah! Look at this! I’m actually getting a comment up on the blog! 🙂

Thanks for all the wonderful comments on this shot! To answer your questions real quick, the missing noise at 800 ISO is because I’m shooting with the Sony A900. That camera is beautiful!

The white balance is almost always set to AWB (Auto White Balance).

No post process at all on this one. In fact, unless the shot is black and white the images are pretty much straight out of the camera. That’s how beautiful the rich color is on the Sony A900! Awesome, huh!!

Wait till you see the post I’m working on for tomorrow. You are all going to CRACK UP!!

  19. Melanie says:

This is a phenomenal photo!!! I absolutely LOVE it!

  20. Jill says:

Blaze-You look so big in that photo. Amazing. For years to come, your family will have quite the stories to tell that will always begin with “Remember that time in Thailand….”

  23. Christiana says:

Speaking of recipes..I saw Jeff Corwin on TV this weekend sampling exotic fare in Thailand – giant grasshoppers, giant wasps, bamboo larva and a lot more. Thought of you all there and hope you haven’t been offered any of those on your menu!

  24. Charla says:

You are living my dream. I will be there one day with my guys too. Beautiful, rich, stunning photograph!

  25. Paris Parfait says:

Such fantastic experiences you’re all living! Wonderful photos, especially of the sleeping adventurer.

  26. Paris Parfait says:

P.S. I too have the new Sony A900 and two Carl Zeiss lenses and have fallen completely in love with the astonishing clarity. (Not thrilled about the weight with one of those lenses plus a flash, though – but overall it’s such a wonderful camera, the weight seems like a minor issue). Thanks for these great tips!

  27. Janet says:

    Amazing vacation pics…thanks for sharing!

  28. Kelly says:

What a fantabulous adventure you’re living MeRa!
    Thanks for taking us along!

  29. Genie says:

DUDE! Good to know Batman’s alive and well, protecting those in need in Thailand!! Hey, make sure you eat mangosteens & rambutans (a couple of my fave fruits in the world) and check out the grilled squid at the night market in Krabi!

  30. Genie says:
