Part 2: Seattle Confidence Workshop

Me Ra Koh

Day 2 at the Seattle Confidence Workshop was full of ENERGY!

We had some awesome family models that gave our attendees amazing opportunities to practice everything we had taught them so far.  We had some ideal conditions for shooting and again, some not-so-ideal.  The ladies were challenged to find the “good light” and Brian and I are so proud of  the images they took.  See for yourself…

We always talk about how to capture the most flattering viewpoint of individuals, especially moms.  I love how Terri Seal shot Mom here.  She is looking radiant in the window light and the expressions on the parents face in your second image are perfection!

Oh my goodness, I saw this first image from Jessica Little and thought it should be in some magazine somewhere.  There is something to be said about “Refuse to Say Cheese”! 🙂

Shelly Pelley, you certainly caught those “catch lights” in this little guys eyes!  Amazing!

Kristen Schoon caught Dy’s family against a plain, warm background with beautiful light filling the front.  Super work finding the light, which can be difficult sometimes shooting a family with young children.

Look at this little girls expression!  That is probably one of those expressions where the parents say “I can’t believe you got that face in an image, she does that look all the time!”  Great job JoAnne McArdle.   And I love the color tone you put on the family image during post-processing!

I am so excited that Fabia Distefano took this image of Dy’s little girl!  When we are shooting a family session, we focus so much on their faces.  Fabia took 2 seconds to point her camera down to take this shot.  It totally tells us a story about this little girl in this stage of her life.  Yay!

Love this shot from Jen Stegman.  Just love it!

Kim Ebert…I am in amazement at the impact that your two images below has.  They both should be very large canvases in these families’ homes.  Really, really fun composition!

You can barely see, but take a look at how creamy and blurry the background is on Carmalee Baker’s image of this little guy with his mom and dad.  Don’t be afraid to shoot with a aperture around 2.8, even with families.  You will love the results!

Chantelle did the same thing.  The blurry background allows you to take images in less-than-desirable locations, with the images closely focusing on the subject.  Remember, when you are shooting wide-open, and you are close up, the further the background is from the subject, the blurrier it will be.

Kandi Petorak, such a sweet image of this little guy…and I love the smile on mom’s face.

I just love that this family was basically in the same place when Melissa Leady, Darcy Pace, Andrea Walters and Lara McClusky shot these images…and look what a different eye they all had.  Not to mention that turquoise and orange go really well together.  Awesome Ladies!

We tend to focus on the mom during family sessions.  This image of dad is so great!  Way to capture this moment Rox Spiegel!

I love the “timeless” feel of these next four images from Sara Arrigoni, Raelene Kerner, and Rachel Tara.  They are all such different viewpoints, yet totally symbolizing a child’s innocence.  Sara is really turning into the SOAR! Forum “superstar”!  I am so proud of you!

It is so much fun to see these great images of Dy and her adorable family taken by Melissa Jones!  Dy is a SOAR! Applicant and workshop attendee!  Thanks Dy!

I can’t leave you without some really great behind-the-scenes images from Day 2.  It was a fantastic weekend!  Thanks to all you fabulous new friends!  I hope we empowered you with tools to reach your dreams.

XOXO
Me Ra

I love seeing Confidence workshop images because it always brings back all the great memories from the workshop I attended!

Great job on these images, ladies!!!

  4. Sara A says:

Jan, don’t despair! First of all, they are miracle workers. 🙂 But more than that, they really demystify things so that you will feel empowered. In a couple weeks you’ll be looking at your own great pictures on day one, after only a few hours of training, and you will realize that the sky is the limit!

  5. Jan B says:

Thanks, Sara. Now I am even more excited about the workshop.

  6. Me Ra says:

  9. Jan B says:

I just found out that I will have a new grandbaby in April. What perfect timing!

  10. Andrea says:

I 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th what all these ladies have said!!! It is so incredibly invigorating to see all these beatiful shots…and to see pictures of all of us jumping in, having fun, finding out who we are from behind the camera. Taking risks! (Scary on the front end to do that, but SO empowering and confidence building on the other side!)

I do love the collages. Wonderful way to show off more pictures in a way that is totally pleasing to the eye!

Me Ra and Brian, thank you for not just teaching people how to take better pictures, but for changing women’s lives and for being so generous to want to share what you’ve learned so that others can soar in their own journeys and dreams. Much love to you both!

  11. Raelene says:

I just wanted to chime in to agree with Sara & Andrea. I am still amazed at how Me Ra and Brian are able to work such magic in such little time. It is so much more than just teaching the “hard” skills of photography. The two of them just jump right in and break every barrier you ever put on yourself!

    LOVE the collages!

  12. fabia says:

i am still oh so glad that i went to this workshop – not only do mera and brian empower women, the community that was built out of this weekend is indispensable for me. it is great to have such a great group of women to bounce ideas/questions/successes and failures off.
thanks for providing the initial spark to develop a photography village of our own.

  13. Jen S says:

    Me Ra–
Thanks for all of your wonderful feedback on our pictures. It is truly inspiring to revisit this weekend through your blogs and to be taken right back to that crossroads of fear and exhilaration as I learned more about my camera and how to capture stories in my pictures. I am loving the journey! It is fun as well to continue to be connected with some of these lovely ladies through FB and to see how each of our own journeys are playing out…I continue to be inspired by the work they are doing and sharing…wow, wow, wow!!
Your gift to not only teach, but to lift each person up and inspire is wonderful! All the best to you and your family!
