To Twitter or Not to Twitter?

Me Ra Koh

Just curious to know your thoughts on this one.

Have any of you heard of Twitter? And if so, what do you think of it?

For those of you who don’t know what Twitter is my best explanation of it is a way to update what you’re doing at any given time from any given place. It feels similar to Facebook’s feature of being able to say what you’re doing right now. You can check out my Facebook Profile (search for MeRa Koh with all the spacing and caps done right) and you’ll see what I mean. At the top it will say “Me Ra Koh…is wishing she was at her Zumba class! updated x amount of hours ago”

This little feature on Facebook is fun b/c I can just pull up my page and see what friends are up to. (BTW, I’m only a week old in Facebook and totally getting addicted to it!)

But even though the feature in Facebook seems fun, the Twitter thing makes me feel anxious. Not sure why. I love seeing my friend, Sara France’s twitter updated. If you click on her blog, you’ll see the red box pop up on the right side. I think it’s hilarious when she twitters about having a drink at this moment and watching American Idol.

But when I went to actually start my account, I backed out feeling anxious about the whole thing.

Just wondering if you any of you have thoughts on this whole Twitter business and how much “up to date info is too much”?

  1. Scott and I have been having fun with Facebook for a few weeks now. Glad your on board. It is quite addicting and an awesome way to stay connected and get re-connected! Love Brians Profile pic by the way, he is somthing else! “Looks like he’s ready for the Cat Walk” Perhaps that’s the face he was making out the window at Vegas? I just signed up for Twitter and I’ss see if I like it.

i was on facebook for a while. i just don’t have time or energy to keep up with all the apps. i’d like to be able to just call someone and find out how they’re doing, not read about it. there’s so much information out there – i have to filter it or i get a little crazy.

    Hi
It’s kind of like a cell phone, it’s nice that you can reach people all the time but sometimes it’s nice to turn it off. (or in my case let the battery die)

  4. Facebook is way too much for me. It’s not just the status updates; I only have like 7 friends on Facebook and I’m constantly getting invitations for this game or that survey. And it all seems like a lot of fluff — I don’t feel like I’m really getting closer to my friends or even communicating with them. It’s kind of like trying to get to know your friends by forwarding every poem and joke to everyone you know.

OTOH, I really like Twitter. It’s simple, and it’s direct interaction. It’s just me talking and people talking back. I also like it better than a message board or chatroom, because everyone who sees my messages has specifically subscribed to read what I have to say, and vice versa.

  5. I’m with you on the whole anxious feeling. I think that the social/cyber world thing opens up doors to your life that if in the wrong hands, could be dangerous. I think it’s great amongst friends, and I get it, I just don’t think I’ll jump on that wagon:)

I’m also on Facebook and love it as a way to waste time. I enjoy reading other people’s ‘status’ but rarely post my status….For one thing, I have more “friends” that I don’t really know than those that I do and don’t feel comfortable being completely honest. I think there are unwritten rules everyone seems to understand about what you should and shouldn’t say. For example, one day I seriously considered, Melissa has PMS. Ha! But there are all those friends I don’t know very well so I didn’t do it. But I almost did, just to make a point.

I looked at twitter the other night, but seems like another thing to keep up with, along with having a website, blog, myspace, facebook, whatever else, so I’m with you on the anxiety of messing with that. I’d end up putting in things like “picking my toes while staring at the screen when I’m suppose to be editing” Course, I’m not afraid to show how dorky I am so that could be dangerous 🙂

I abhor twitter! I just don’t see any benefit of broadcasting inane details about my life across the world. I draw the line at blogging. 😉 Really though, as much as I love technology and I’m surrounded by the “latest and greatest,” I work really hard at maintaining boundaries between the jittery/twittery/blinking side of life and the relaxed, family-focused goals we have for ourselves.

    Get on board!!! 😀

  10. Twitter is awesome, I love it. I send the updates right to my Facebook profile and on my blog.

  11. We LOVE twitter. It’s a fun way of keeping up with your friends throughout all the times that you don’t talk to them, and them the same for you. Check this video out: http://evhead.com/2008/03/twitter-explained.html#links
That’s twitter in a nutshell. Great to see you in Vegas~

  12. I think that the amount of information you put out there is up to you… but it is fun to hear about others and stay connected since everything is so fast–and yes it is a total time waster! But you can synch up FaceBook and twitter so you only have to update your status once… some people are using it like marketing, which is genius (check out my new blog, etc…)…. I like keep up with you!!

Just signed up for twitter…time will tell. I am also a new member on facebook so I am still getting accustomed. By the way MeRa…every time I search for your profile I get some strange girl from I am not sure where…maybe I am not putting it in right..

  14. Me Ra says:

your feedback is FANTASTIC! I love to see the diversity in what people are thinking. Thanks!

  15. BTW, to the people who were concerned with the privacy issue, you can make your Twitter private if you like. I originally used Twitter as a way to leave short messages back and forth with my husband. (He was able to use Twitter on his old cell phone, so it was like an easier way to text message him.) When I decided to make my Twitter public, I went back and deleted some things that I didn’t want the world to see, like messages when I was having a bad day and vented to dear hubby.

Twitter is awesome…it’s like passing secret notes without the teacher finding out. I have two accounts…one for photog and the other for my soon to be former 9-5. We always pass notes in meetings via text message to each other…good times!

I think I’m loving it. I just started putting it on my blog…and I’m kind of loving it. It allows me to capture small, yet not expandable, thoughts and publish them as little blurbs. Not sure if I’ll keep it – but I’m going to test drive it and see… 🙂
